3 Topic Selection Topics should be from one of the two following selections 1.Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History 2.Texas or Local History Examples for #1: John Brown’s Revolt Against Slavery, The Model T: Henry Ford Revolutionizes the Auto Industry, Pablo Picasso: A Revolution in Art, The Copernican Revolution: Copernicus, Galileo, and Kepler Examples for #2: Stephen Austin and his role in founding Texas, Barbara Jordan, & the creation of Ft. Hood Key is focus on their impact & legacies, not family, birth, and little details—need to research how they changed history, what they did that was important

4 Due Date/JH School Contest Due Date for Merit Points: Feb. 10 Projects will be kept until the school contest which will occur the following week. Documentary & performance contestants must be present for the judging—times will be given out at the Feb. 10 th meeting. Winners will be announced at the next meeting Suggestions for improvements will be given to all contestants who turn in a project. Only 2 projects per category will advance to the contest held at the state convention.

5 Requirements for All Categories Title Sheet (Title of Project, Name, Category Selected, Junior Division) Annotated Bibliography (see paper) 1.Divide into Primary & Secondary Sources 2.Annotate to explain how you used this source when making your project & how it helped you understand your topic 3.Should be at least 10 sources, no required number 500 Word Process Paper—except for paper writers 1.Explanation of conducting research 2.How you selected your topic & created your project 3.Importance of topic in history, with an emphasis on the change your topic had on society

6 Research Papers Must be completed by one student, due on Feb. 10th Must be in Denton by 3/1, Final copies must be turned into Mrs. D’Amore by 2/23. Requirements 1.1500-2500 Words 2.Must Contain Endnotes (see paper) 3.Submit 4 Copies 4.Must be Typed 5.Using 1 Inch Margins & Font Size of 11 or 12 6.Avoid plagiarism 7.Judged on Organization, Originality of Topic, Writing Style, Documentation, & Total Content of Paper 8.Use primary sources if possible

7 Exhibits Visual representation of research & your interpretation of your topic’s importance in history Size (Maximum of 6 ft. tall, 40 in. wide, & 30 in. deep) 500 Word Limit on Exhibit Labels & Captions should be used with pictures Can be made by one or a group

8 Performance Dramatic play of your topic’s importance in history, must be original & a live performance Requirements: 1.May not exceed 10 minutes 2.Required to answer questions from judges 3.Must be memorized 4.5 minute set-up & take down (for props) 5.Costumes should be used 6.Can be individual or group

9 Documentaries “A documentary should reflect your ability to use audiovisual equipment to communicate your topic’s significance in history.” Materials used: photographs, film, video, audio tapes Requirements: 1.10 minute time maximum 2.Student run & student production 3.Can’t be a powerpoint in traditional sense, must be like a History Channel documentary 4.Will answer questions from judges 5.Can be individual or group
