2 Diversion – the process of removing low-risk offenders from the formal juvenile justice system by placing them in community- based rehabilitation programs

3 Probation, Treatment and aid, Restitution

4 The juvenile returns to the community, but is placed under the supervison of a juvenile probation officer. If youth breaks conditions of his/her probation, they can be returned to the formal juvenile system.

5 Juveniles with behavorial/medical conditions, are placed in diverson programs that offer remedial education, drug and alcohol treatment, and counseling.

6 Offender “repays” his/her victim, either directly or through community service symbollically.

7 Researchers believe that going through the formal justice system “labels” the youth a delinquent, which leads to problems for them, which leaves to further delinquent behavior.
