1 The Bill of rights made sure peoples rights were being protected while Amendments 11-27 show that the constitution is a living changing document.

2  Gave people the following rights:  Freedom of Speech  Freedom of religion  Freedom of the Press  Freedom of Assembly  Freedom to Petition

3  Amendment 2 Gave the People the right to:  To Keep a well Regulated Militia  Own and bear arms  Amendment 3 Gave the people the right to:  Refuse to Quarter Soldiers without consent  This applies to both peace and war times

4  This Amendment protects people from:  Search and Seizures without a warrant  Warrants without probable cause  Warrants without proper details and protections

5  This amendment protects people from:  Testifying against oneself or admitting to a crime  Not having a Lawyer  Double Jeopardy(standing trial for the same crime twice)  Having Due Process suspended

6  Amendment 6 Protects peoples rights to:  A Speedy Trial  A trial by Jury  A trial where the crime was committed  The right to counsel  The right to Obtain Witnesses on their behalf

7  Amendment 7 protects a persons right to:  A trial by Jury in a Civil Case where the controversy exceeds Twenty Dollars  This is pertains to Civil Suits NOT criminal Suits  Amendment 8 Protects a person from:  Excessive Bail and Fines  Cruel and Unusual Punishment

8  Amendment 9 States that:  If a right isn't listed in the bill of rights or amendments the people still are protected from the government  Amendment 10 states that:  Powers not listed for the National government OR not restricted to the states are controlled by individual states

9  Amendment 11 States:  That Citizens of One State or Foreign State cannot create a lawsuit against the government of another state Example: The Citizens of Colorado CANNOT sue Ohio to legalize Marijuana in Ohio or obtain money from Ohio because it is NOT legal

10  The 12 th Amendment:  Changed the way we voted for and elected President of the United States and Vice President  Old Way: The person who finished second place in the election of president was the vice president  New Way: The President and Vice President run Together on a Ballot and are elected together

11  Amendment 13 officially ended slavery in the United States except as punishment for a crime  Amendment 14 expanded civil rights in the United States  Ensured Civil rights based on Race, Gender, and Disability  It expanded the ability run for office to ALL adult males(Non Native American)

12  Amendment 15 extended the right to vote to all adult males over the age of 21 regardless of race  Amendment 16 created an income tax for the United States  Amendment 17 expanded the office of the senate to TWO senators and clarified how vacancies in senate are filled

13  Amendment 18 Made alcohol illegal and would take effect ONE year after the ratification of the amendment  Amendment 19 extended the right to vote to all women over the age of 21  Amendment 21 Repealed prohibition and made alcohol legal again

14  Amendment 20 is the Lame Duck Amendment and clarified the rules of a president and congress leaving office  A president’s term ends at noon on January 20 th and a congressperson’s term ends at noon on January 3 rd  If a president dies BEFORE taking office the vice president becomes president

15  Amendment 22 put a term limit of 2 terms or 10 years on the office of the President of the United States  Amendment 23 gave Washington D.C. 3 electoral votes in the election for President of the United States  Amendment 24 abolished the Poll Tax as a term of voting. This helped further extend voting rights to African Americans and the Poor

16  Amendment 25 clarified the line of succession for the president in the case of death and disability  The Vice president takes over for the president and nominates a Vice President who has to be approved by congress  If the president is not able to carry out his duties he must make a written request to step down to the Speaker of the House and President Pro Tempore and must prove he is fit to take office to come back  The Vice President can also make a request that the president is unfit to hold office

17  Amendment 26 extended the right to vote to all people 18 years old and over  Amendment 27 stated that a raise in congressional pay cannot take effect until AFTER the election of representatives has taken place
