2. Objectives Understand and identify the importance of verbs and their usage. Analyze a work of fiction for the effects of narrative techniques. Homework: Vocabulary Choosing the Right Word Prepositions quiz 9/3 Passage packet and annotations due 9/4 Complete verb worksheet if not completed

3. Warm Up Write 5 short sentences describing your favorite sport. Identify the prepositional phrases. Ex: Soccer is the best sport that uses a ball flying through the air.

4. Vocabulary Groups I will allow you to pick your ¾ person group for today. You must work and accomplish the goal in order to stay in the group. You have 10 minutes to review the words and begin completing lesson 1 choosing the right word. Remember that I check for accuracy on homework so do a good job! Whatever you do not finish is homework……..Begin!

5. Short Preposition Quiz Take a handout and write your name on it. No talking. You will have 5 minutes to complete. When finished, take out your Vocabulary flashcards.

6. Verbs A verb is a word that expresses action or a state of being and is necessary to make a statement. Ex: I am free. (Am is the verb as it is a state of being.) “Real” Verbs are separated into: 1.Action 2.Linking There is also a verb-like type called helping verbs.

7. Action Verbs Action verbs tell what a person or thing does. They can express mental or physical action. Ex: The dog barked all day. (physical action) Ex: He thought about the dog all day. (mental action)

8. Linking Verbs A linking verb joins the subject of a sentence with a word or expression that identifies or describes the subject. Expresses a state of being. All forms of the verb to be are linking verbs. Ex: The teacher is cranky. (Is links cranky to teacher.)

9. Handy Tip for Linking Verbs Linking verbs are like the equal signs of language. (=) Any verb that can be replaced with is, am, are, be, become, or becomes to create a sentence with nearly the same meaning is a linking verb.
