1 LoyalistNeutral Colonists who supported the Declaration of Independence Most found in New England (especially which state?) Many were people who owed a lot of money- hoped to win independence so they would not have to pay off debts. Colonists who did not support the Declaration of Independence Most were wealthy landowners, priests from the Church of England, people with political or economic ties to England… Found in NYC and Southern states Many were abused by Patriots and fled the country The Iroquois had a good relationship with the British (Why???) Chose no side in the American Revolution Many were Non- English, believing the conflict was between England and its colonies so they stayed out of it. Tenant Farmers- People who farmed on an owner’s land. These people generally sided in relation to the owner. If the owner of their land was a Loyalist and treated them badly, they would side with the Patriots. Similarly, if the owner was a loyalist and treated the tenant well, the tenant would side with the Loyalists. Patriot

2 A. Patriot B. Loyalist C. Neutral

3 Spy- Someone who secretly collects information and reports on the activities of one group to a competing group

4  Directions: During the American Revolution both the American Continental Army and the British Army had spies to keep track of their enemy. You have been hired by the British to recruit a spy in the colonies. You must choose your spy from one of the mystery colonists and write a letter convincing him or her to become your spy. When making your decision use the following criteria:  The spy cannot be someone who the Patriots mistrust. The spy should be a person who appears to agree with the Patriots.  The spy should live in a populated area where the Patriots are active and can report on Patriot activity. A colonist in a rural area will have little information to provide.  The spy should need something from the British, either money or military protection, to entice him or her to risk his or her life.  Requirements:  1-page letter (Double-spaced if typed (must be printed))  Identify which colonist you are recruiting.  Why you are choosing this colonist.  Be creative and explain why they are being recruited for this mission.  Use outside information to help convince the colonist to become a spy!
