CEWD Workforce Summit Charlotte N.C. IBEW Headquartered in Washington D.C.

IBEW has 750,000 members 220,000 in the utility industry

We see two types of companies; 1. Companies that are still not replacing their workforce, primarily because of money issues. 2. Companies that realize the severe workforce shortage and are now having a difficult time recruiting.

What worked in the past? Utilities hired and trained their workforce In house training Apprenticeship programs, some jointly with the union and many just employer programs

What can work and what is needed today? Don’t give up on the proven model Use community colleges and online courses to supplement training in house Use programs that feed people into the company with basic skills (pre-apprentice)

How can we work with Unions? The utility industry has hundreds of models no one program fits them all. The IBEW does not have a typical utility program. The IBEW has several National Joint Apprentice Training Committees (NJATC) nationwide. In the past the NJATC has primarily trained construction lineman (contractors'). We are working to change that and include training for utilities. We are looking for utility company partners now.

What won’t work is expecting someone else to do your job You cannot train someone in a class room to be a journeyman lineman! A person with 2 years of college is not as valuable as an employee that has worked with a trained lineman for 2 years, not even close
