Conditional Statements By: [NAME REMOVED]

Vocabulary ◦ Conditional Statements ◦ An if-then statement. ◦ Hypothesis ◦ The if part of a conditional statement. ◦ Conclusion ◦ The then part of a conditional statement. ◦ Inverse Statement ◦ To make the conditional statement negative. To make the if-then statement negative. ◦ Converse Statement ◦ Flip the if-then conditional statement, then it becomes converse. ◦ Contrapositive Statement ◦ Flip and make the conditional if-then statement negative.

Theorems and Axioms of Conditional Statements Law of Detachment: If you have a true conditional statement and the hypothesis is true, then you may conclude that the conclusion is true. If p then q P is true Then q is true 12/2/14

Theorems and Axioms of Conditional Statements Law of Syllogism-(the conclusion is another conditional statement) If p then q If q then r Therefore, if p then r 12/2/14

Worked Examples ◦ Example 1:You are given this conditional statement: If I am a turtle, than I am a reptile. What are the Inverse, Converse, and Contrapositive statement? ◦ Make the original statement negative. ◦ Flip the original statement. ◦ Flip the original statement and make it negative. Type of StatementExample Conditional Statement If I am a turtle, than I am a reptile. Inverse StatementIf I am not a turtle, than I am not a reptile. Converse StatementIf I am an reptile, than I am a turtle. Contrapositive Statement If I am not a reptile, than I am not a turtle.

Worked Examples ◦ Example 2: You are given this conditional statement: If I eat spinach, than I am Popeye What are the Inverse, Converse and Contrapositive statements? ◦ Make the original statement negative. ◦ Flip the original statement. ◦ Flip the original statement and make it negative. Type of StatementExample Conditional StatementIf I eat spinach, than I am Popeye. Inverse StatementIf I don’t eat spinach, than I am not Popeye. Converse StatementIf I am Popeye, than I eat Spinach. Contrapositive Statement If I am not Popeye, than I don’t eat spinach.

Tips and Tricks To come up with different statements all you have to do is: Flip the original statement, meaning change the “then” to the “it”, and the “it” to the “then”. Make the original statement negative Or flip the original statement and make it negative. Side-note: Negative means to add not in front of the statement. Flip means to make the conclusion the hypothesis.

Practice Problems Number 1: You are given this Contrapositive Statement: If I don’t like Wonder Woman, then I am not a feminist. What is the original conditional statement?

Practice Problems Number 2: You are given this Converse Statement: If you like the 1975, then you are Victoria. What is the original conditional statement?

Practice Problems Number 3: You are given this Conditional Statement: If you like Brussel sprouts, then you are awesome. What is the inverse statement?

Practice Problems Number 4: You are given a Conditional Statement: If 7x/2 equals 28, then x equals 8. What is the converse statement?

Practice Problems Number 5: You are given this inverse statement: If you don’t do 200 squats, then you won’t be tired. What is the contrapositive statement?

Practice Problem Answers Number 1: If I am a feminist, then I do like wonder woman. Number 2: If you are Victoria, then you like the 1975. Number 3:If you don’t like brussels sprouts, then you are not awesome. Number 4: If x equals 6, then 7x/2 equals 28. Number 5: If you are not tired, then you did not do 200 squats.
