7 The Laura Bush 21 st Century Librarian Program at Santa Ana Public Library: From Seeds to Trees: Growing the Bilingual Librarian of Tomorrow from High School Diploma through MLIS with Santa Ana Public Library and Orange County REFORMA

8 Between July 2010 and June 2013, SAPL and OC-Reforma will conduct a three-tiered recruitment and training program Three Stages: Seeds to Sprouts – Teens 12-18 Sprouts to Saplings – College Age Saplings to Young Trees – MLIS Students

9 Need for program Critical shortage of Spanish speaking librarians The need for qualified and culturally sensitive bilingual librarians in Hispanic service areas is acute. The number of Latino students enrolled in MLIS programs very small. Libraries and students in Hispanic communities need one another: the library to develop effective staffing, and the students to find means of enhancing their future prospects and improving conditions in their communities.

12 Probation youth We have 1 spot specifically reserved for probation youth Tutors/mentors variety of skills – including previous work with probation youth. Probation youth must have already served community service and/or volunteered 50 hours in the library and have a recommendation from their probation officer

20 The New Approach From An Old Model An Apprenticeship and Service Learning approach where teens receive important mentoring and guidance Teens get an important hands-on learning experience in careers or professions that they may not have considered and learn a culture of professionalism Career Professionals get a to mentor and develop the next generations of professionals in their fields from a young age It is a good pathway for community sustainability and economic development in high immigrant communities like Santa Ana Overall it can be a Meaningful and Positive Experience for All Parties Involved
