Engaging Parents in the Common Core Math and Reading Night How do CCSS (Common Core State Standards) impact my child’s education, and how can I aid in his/her success?

Why We Need Common Core: "I choose C." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dY2mRM4i6tY ? ? ?

What are the benefits? Common standards ensure that all students, no matter where they live, will be focused on graduating high school and being prepared for post secondary schools. Prepares students to succeed in a competitive work force environment. Define what students should know and be able to do at each grade level

How is it different? More emphasis on use of knowledge Less worksheets and more doing Greater emphasis on real-world application More open-ended questions Problem solving that requires students to evaluate and determine best answers/solutions

Our Focus Is On English Language Arts/Literacy Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction Reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both fictional and informational Regular practice with complex text and its academic language

Parent(s) Engagement- Language Arts Open-ended questions encourage learning Asking open-ended questions give children opportunities to use an expanded vocabulary and we can check for understanding. An answer to an open-ended question gives us a window into our students thinking process.

Open-Ended Response Question Strategy Strategy 1: Stealing from the Question Strategy 2: Textual Evidence /Personal Connections/ Figurative Language Strategy 3: Closing Statement Strategy 4: COPS Capitalization Organization Punctuation Spelling

Parent(s) Engagement- Language Arts Your time to practice with open-ended questions Read your assigned text Answer your assigned open- ended question Remember the four Strategy Be detailed in your response Strategy 1: Stealing from the Question Strategy 2: Textual Evidence /Personal Connections/ Figurative Language Strategy 3: Closing Statement Strategy 4: COPS

What can you do as parent(s)? View common core standards to get a feel for what your child will be learning {School website/download App for Common Core Standards by Mastery Connect} Encourage your child to research a topic {using informational texts and original documents}. As your child read, ask in-depth why and how questions. Example, read three different versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and ask your child to compare and contrast.

What can you do as parent(s)? Homework: Ask him/her how this might be used in “real life”.” Examples of how you would use the concepts your learning at school in your own everyday life. (i.e. grocery shopping, work, and paying bills) Ask your child to explain or show how they’re solving problems. As your child completes homework, help them focus in on the most important aspects and core concepts.
