2 www.argans.co.uk SMOS L2 Ocean Salinity Version 500 schedule – IODD & schema delivered 9 May 2011 for L2 spec & SDV/BEAM SMOS-box – pre-FAT delivery 27 May 2011 – FAT 21 & 22 June 2011 proposed configuration changes (AUX_CNFOSD/F) – Tg_max_rainfall = 0.01 m/s (was 0.002) – Tg_SSS_max = 42 psu (was 40), Tg_SSS_min = 0 psu (was 30) – Tg_TEC_gradient TBD (317/DPGS = 5 tecu, previously 10 tecu) see later slides TBD – Refine model 2 LUT: omega (inverse wave age) & phi_wsn not retrieved – Refine model 3 LUT: phi_wsn & HS not retrieved – Correct under estimated Galactic noise model –...? L2OS status

3 www.argans.co.uk SMOS L2 Ocean Salinity What’s new in v500? – No longer setting Fm_valid to false when Fm_l1c_rfi flag is set – Fm_l1c_rfi = new L1c RFI tails flag (or’d with mitigation, strong, & point RFI flags) – Dg_L2_RFI replaces Dg_eaf_fov in UDP (L1c no longer contains Fm_eaf_fov) OSUDP2 minor schema change (requires SDV/BEAM update) – Removed Fg_ctrl_poor_geophysical from quality tests – Fixed SPH poor (& good) successful retrievals counters see http://www.argans.co.uk/smos/L2OS/verification.phphttp://www.argans.co.uk/smos/L2OS/verification.php – L2 RFI detection/mitigation: new AUX_CNFOSD/F thresholds & schema RFI_std = 1.2, RFI_nsig = 3, Tg_num_RFI_max = 50% (see RFI presentation) – Other PRs fixed: Outlier detection now calculates median of differences as specified in ATBD Name of the processor in log messages now conforms with the ICD (includes L2OS version) Corrected BULL_B orchestration L2OS status

4 www.argans.co.uk SMOS L2 Ocean Salinity New/changed flags in v500 – Fml1c_border_fov = 1 if the pixel is close to the border delimiting the Extended Alias free zone or to the unit circle replicas borders (also known as “suspenders and belts”). Distance threshold is configurable through FOV_Border_Flag_Size field in AUX CNFL1P FOV_Border_Flag_Size TBD (SD AI) L2OS:if Fml1c_border_fov then Fm_valid = 0 – Fml1c_sun_point = 1 if pixel is located in a zone (circle around Sun alias position with radius configurable through Sun_Point_Flag_Size field in AUX CNFL1P) where a Sun alias was reconstructed (if Sun removal is active, measurement may be degraded) Sun_Point_Flag_Size: circle with r = 0.075 (diameter = 0.15) – email 04/05/2011 XB/RC L2OS:if Fml1c_sun_point or Fml1c_sun_tails or Fml1c_sun_glint_fov then Fm_l1c_sun= 1 if Fm_l1c_sun then Fm_valid = 0 L1c changes

5 www.argans.co.uk SMOS L2 Ocean Salinity RFI flags in v500 – Fml1c_rfi_mitigation = 1 if RFI Mitigation has been performed during image reconstruction of this pixel measurement – Fml1c_rfi_strong = 1 if measurement is affected by strong RFI as detected in the L1b processing (max RFI self estimated BT above a defined threshold) – Fml1c_rfi_tails = 1 if measurement is affected by the tails of a point source RFI as identified in the AUX RFI list (tail width is dependant on the RFI expected BT defined in the AUX RFILST) – Fml1c_rfi_point = 1 if measurement is affected by point source RFI as identified in the AUX RFI list (flag is set in a circle around the RFI position, with a radius dependant on the RFI expected BT defined in the AUX RFILST), or it has exceeded the threshold defined in BT_Dual/Full_RFI_Pixel_Flag_Threshold fields in AUX CNFL1P, or is negative for dual pol – L2OS: if Fml1c_rfi_point or Fml1c_rfi_tails or Fml1c_rfi_mitigation or Fml1c_rfi_strong then Fm_l1c_rfi = 1 Dg_RFI_L1 = count(Fm_l1c_rfi) L1c changes
