EF310 Current Trends in Exercise and Fitness: Aging Well Across the Lifespan Instructor: Heather Reiseck, MS, ATC Good evening everyone! Welcome to our first seminar! It’s great to be meeting with all of you this evening!

Review Course Policies and Procedures (Syllabus) Course Topics Overview Lecture Case Studies Summary and Q & A In today’s seminar, we will address the course syllabus, will get know each other (at least a little bit) , lay the foundation for the course, and then get started on our seminar questions.

3 Where in the WORLD are you?
To start, where is everyone from? I am East Alton, IL (St. Louis, MO area). Wow! We're from all over the place — isn’t this great? I love finding out where everyone is from. (create poll w/ yes and no answers): How many of you have taken Kaplan Seminars before? Great, so most of you will know what to expect. I would also like to know about your previous seminar experiences at Kaplan. Tell me what you like about Kaplan seminars you’ve attended in past classes.

4 Course Objectives Identify issues and challenges in exercise and fitness for each age group cohort.   Discuss the exercise and fitness needs for each age group cohort. Define motivational strategies and techniques for each age group cohort  Design fitness and exercise plans for each age group cohort.   Evaluate current research outcomes for exercise and fitness programs in community and/or corporate based settings.   Demonstrate awareness of national organizations with certification programs and resource materials for exercise and fitness programs.

5 Course Materials Software: Microsoft Word is required for all Kaplan Courses Text: Fitness Professional’s Handbook 5th Edition Author: Edward Howley and B. Don Franks Text: Fit To Be Well, Essential Concepts Author: Thygerson & Thygerson Text: Motivating People To Be Physically Active, Second Edition Author: Bess Marcus and LeighAnn Forsyth (create poll w/ yes and no answers) Do you have your textbooks and lab book? If not, your advisors and if you still haven’t received one by the end of Unit 1, let me know so that I can do some follow-up for you. Who read all the announcements I posted? Are there any questions associated with the announcements? Have all of you found your copy of the syllabus? Where did you find it? (doc sharing and under course home) The copy in Doc sharing is there for you to print. I recommend that you start a file for each of the courses you take at Kaplan. I want to begin this evening by addressing the major areas of the syllabus, ok?

7 Projects There are 5 projects and 1 Exercise due for this class
4 of these projects are exercise and fitness programs for various age and impairment groups (units 3,4,6,8) The 5th is an evaluation of a research article on a community or corporate exercise/fitness program (unit 9) Kaplan requires Microsoft Word to submit projects. Word is different than WordPerfect or Microsoft Works. Please check to be sure that your software is compatible. There are 5 projects, which make up a good portion of your final grade, so make sure to plan ahead so you have enough time to complete the projects to the best of your abilities and also review the plagiarism policy.

8 Rubrics Please review the grading rubrics included in your syllabus. I follow these descriptions very carefully in assigning grades for discussion board postings, seminar participation, and for projects. Question for you. Why is it important to post to the board as early in the week as possible, say on Wednesday or Thursday?

9 Early Postings Are Critical
Discussion Board Participation Rubric Students are expected to post a Minimum of three posts per unit discussion thread. one post in response to the instructor’s question by EOD Saturday two posts in response to two classmates by EOD Tuesday, end of unit Yes, it is important to respond first to my question with a thoughtful response that meets the criteria listed in the grading rubric of your syllabus. (no spelling, grammatical errors, length requirements) etc. Then, come back to the board the following day or so and read what other students have posted. Respond thoughtfully with substantive comments to your classmates’ posts each week! Responses such as, “I agree, good job” will not count toward your postings. Sorry…..  This class will be very interesting and helpful to you if you start communicating with your fellow classmates from day one! You will be very successful with the discussion board if you understand the importance of interaction with me and with your classmates. It is important to check your post by reading it aloud and by running the spell check before hitting “Post”. Make sure that it will make sense to your reader! It is also a good idea to have a second set of eyes looking at your project. They would probably find things that you can no longer see. Does everyone understand what I mean? One way I make sure you all stay on track is by redirecting the discussion a bit. You'll see that I like to steer you in different directions with my additional comments/questions/activities. WHY? I will be trying to help you to THINK CRITICALLY and a little deeper! Most students will expand more and more each week with their postings. Do you have any general questions regarding the discussion board requirements? From reading your introductions, so far, you have much in common with each other and with me! Think of the board as a dynamic and important conversation---but, not small talk. As for posting and exercises, I will grade them by Sunday following the due date on Tuesday. Project grading takes me quite awhile, but I want to make sure that I give each of you meaningful feedback and a fair grade. This is important to me. TIP: Some students find it easier to write their comments in Word, then copy and paste their comments onto the discussion board. That way you can give your posting more thought and time for editing without being online (this also keeps you from getting booted out of the system).

10 LATE POLICY Late work will NOT be accepted unless there are clear and compelling extenuating circumstances. You must contact your instructor immediately—prior to the assignment/exam/quiz due-date unless prevented from doing so by emergency circumstances.

11 LATE POLICY Examples of extenuating circumstances are serious personal and/or family illness/hospitalization, death in the family, weather-related evacuation/emergencies, work emergencies, and issues related to active military assignment. Personal computer/software/internet connectivity issues and course blocks are not considered extenuating circumstances. In addition…if you have extenuating circumstances and require extra time to complete an assignment, please me and SPECIFICALLY ask for extra time in light of your situation. Often I have students me to say, “Sorry this was late, but whatever happened, so I’m just now getting it to you.” This form of communication does not ask for extra time it just tells me why your assignment was late, so don’t expect leniency. If you want leniency…ask for it!  I can’t read your mind 

12 Seminar Participation
Small Group Try your best to make it We will learn more from each other during these discussions Seminar Participation Grades: The grading rubric for seminar is posted in your syllabus. Please review carefully to understand how you will earn your grade for this activity. It is important to reference some of the reading material for the week’s lesson in your comments if at all possible. Remember, this is on “real time” class time—everyone should contribute to advancing the class. The seminar goes by very quickly when students are prepared and anxious to join in the discussion. If you miss a seminar, you can do the Option 2 questions inside the course. You can find them under the seminar link for each unit and then scroll down to see the questions. There may be more than one question to answer so make sure you catch them all!

13 Plagiarism and Citing Sources
You MUST use APA formatting and style for your papers. You MUST cite your sources---EVERY assignment should at a minimum cite your textbooks for this course. If you have questions regarding APA format and citations, check out the Writing Center Be sure to review the Plagiarism Policy

14 Netiquette---’Internet Etiquette’
Wait to respond to a message that upsets you and be careful of what you say and how you say it. Be considerate. Inappropriate communication will not be tolerated. Never post a message that is in all capital letters -- it comes across to the reader as SHOUTING! Keep messages short and to the point. Always practice good grammar, punctuation, and composition. Keep in mind that threaded discussions are meant to be constructive exchanges. Be respectful and treat everyone as you would want to be treated yourself. Use spell check!

Pg. 26 in Howley and Franks---HSQ If you have your books easily accessible, please turn to page 23 to see an example of a PAR-Q. As you can see it is a very simple form. Only 7 questions and just yes or no answers. Please turn to page 26. This is an example of an HSQ. As you can see it is much more in depth.

25 Seminar Topic #2 Evaluating health status and assessing risk factors
Section 1 of HSQ is personal info---easy peasy  Section 2 of HSQ: if ANY statement is marked, dr. approval is needed prior to activity After our client has filled out an HSQ, we need to evaluate our clients health status via general medical history. If any statement is marked in this section of the HSQ, we need physician approval before our client begins exercise, ok?

26 Risk Factor Thresholds
Table 3.1, pg. 30 in Howley and Franks It is important that you are familiar with the risk factor thresholds when assessing and stratifying risk factors Make sure you review the risk factors listed in table 3.1. on page 30. It’s important that you be very familiar with them, ok? Keep your finger here. Let’s see how well we do evaluating and stratifying risk factors. Here’s the scenario. Respond to the poll when you have your answer.

27 If everything is ok on the medical history, then we need to assess risk factors and stratification.
If our client marks two or more of the statements in section 3, we need physician approval.

28 Dr. Consent and Exercise Levels
Low risk individuals can begin a vigorous exercise program without dr consent Moderate risk individuals who do not engage in greater than moderate intensity exercise do not need dr consent (<60% HRR) Moderate risk individuals who want to participate in vigorous exercise and high risk individuals require dr consent

Very good! Donna has only one risk factor (hypertension) and therefore does not require physician approval. She is at low risk and can engage in low, moderate or high intensity activity without dr consent. Here’s your next one.

30 You guys are too good! Yes, because of Dave’s age, family history and inactivity, Dave is at moderate risk (moderate since >45 and has more than 2 risk factors) and getting a physician’s consent is advised if he wants to participate in vigorous activity.
