2  The United Nations was formed in 1945 and in 1948 the UN finished writing and adopting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights

3  The declaration was created after the world’s experience with the atrocities and aftermath of World War II and the Holocaust.  The UDHR acknowledge the need for international human rights to be protected by the rule of law. The committee that worked together to draft this document included leaders from Australia, Canada, Chile, China, France, Lebanon, the United Kingdom, and the USSR. The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights

4  “We stand today at the threshold of a great event both in the life of the United Nations and in the life of mankind. This declaration may well become the international Magna Carta for all men everywhere.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt UDHR: Magna Carta For All Mankind Eleanor Roosevelt was appointed as a delegate to the United Nations in 1946 and was instrumental in formulating the UDHR.

5 UDHR has increased:  Awareness and education efforts for human rights  Advocacy funding for human rights Legacy of UDHR

6 UDHR has served as foundation for:  National laws  International laws & treaties  Regional, national, and subnational institutions protecting and promoting human rights UDHR has fostered a commitment among nations to promote and protect universal human rights Legacy of UDHR
