6  My freshman year doesn’t count.  I’m picking this class because my friend is taking it.  I’ll just skip this class. One day won’t make a difference  I don’t need to write down that assignment. I’ll remember it.  My homework is late…I’ll just forget about it.

7  Sorry, I can’t join that club, I have to study all the time.  Everyone else in class understood what the teacher just said except me, so I won’t ask him to explain it.  I don’t want to talk to the teacher about the problems I’m having with her class.  I’m having a problem at school…my friends are helping me  I really don’t need that much sleep.

Look at their work.  Set expectations and rules for completion of work and studying.  Encourage A’s and B’s—know what’s going on.  READ, READ, READ!  Talk to your child about interests, abilities, goals and careers.  Take your child to visit a college.  Find our what courses your child needs.  Attend college fairs and workshops.  Start saving for college now.
