Bell Work Instructions A) First go get your clicker B) Next take out a clean sheet of paper. C) Write your heading in the top/right corner D) Centered on the top line, write this title: Title: Quiz- Adaptations E) Number from 1 to 5 (skip a space after every 3 rd number) F) Next flip your paper over to the back side. G) On the back, centered on the top line, write this title: Title: Quiz- Variations H) Number from 1 to 5 (skip a space after every 3 rd number) I) Wait silently for additional instructions t When you finish, turn in your paper at work station one…  Then complete page 35: 1 to 11 Oct 17, 2014 SPI 0807.5.2 (Adaptations) SPI 0807.5.3 (Variation in Pops) Instructions 1) First click on "View" from the top-menu bar. 2) Then click on "Slide Show" from the drop-down menu. 3) Then use the right-arrow button on your keyboard to advance through this presentation.

Tennessee SPI Objective: Analyze data on levels of variation within a population to make predictions about survival under particular environmental conditions. Notes Science Essential Learning Students will predict which sub-group(s) in a population are best suited to survive under specific environmental conditions. Essential Question What is the connection between variation within a population and the sub-group(s) survival rate? SPI 0807.5.3 Variation in Populations

Notes Science 1) Variation refers to a variety or diversity of traits (different kinds) within any given population of organisms. Example: Look around at the other students. Notice the unique traits that individuals have such as hair color, height, eye color, skin color, etc. 2) Likewise variations occur in nature in populations of plants, animals, insects, fish, etc. Variation in Populations This is an example of variation within the student population SPI 0807.5.3 Variation in Populations

SPI 0807.5.3 Variation in Populations  Look at the picture below of the 5 dogs.  They all belong to the same species (Canis Familiaris).  Notice the variety of traits (different kinds). Variation in Populations This is an example of variation within a dog population Bark! Notes Science

2) The process that drives variation… 3) Changes and variation result from… 4) Changes and variation also result from… …sexual reproduction (over many generations) and changes in the environment …genetic mutations (over many generations) and changes in the environment … is called natural selection organisms must change (adapt) by either changing their behavior or changing their body structure or both. SPI 0807.5.3 Variation in Populations Notes Science 1) When environmental changes occur…
