An Indian Tradition to Establish Symbiosis between Man and Nature Dr Amitabh Saraf, Sc ‘G’, ADA Prof. Rajani R Joshi, IIT Bombay All World Gayatri Pariwar

Modern Life Despite Fast progressFast progress High employmentHigh employment Abundance of wealthAbundance of wealth CommunicationCommunication Luxuries and conveniencesLuxuries and conveniences Specialized healthcareSpecialized healthcare

Sad State of Affairs Problems: –Pollution of land, water, air –Global warming –Social disparity –Slums –Corruption –Terrorism –Breaking families –Stress disorders

Roots of Problems

Analysis of Human Psychology Actions Thoughts Emotions & Sentiments

Solutions Selfishness & self-centeredness to be replaced by sensitivity, caring and sharing Donate what is in excess Lavishness replaced by simplicity Materialistic desires (self) replaced by Spiritual Values (whole creation)

Vedas say इदं यज्ञ भुवनस्य नाभिः | -Atharvaveda (9.15.14) Idam Yagna Bhuvanasya Nabhih The Nucleus of Nature and Life is Yagna

Yagna Fundamental process of manifestation of nature Yagna means – – –selfless sacrifice for noble purposes. – –Sacrificing ego, selfishness and material attachments – –Adopting rational thinking, compassion and creativity for the welfare of all – –Harmonious way of living – –A living style to promote and protect higher humane values in the society – –The basis of the ideal human culture

Physical Process of Yagna Yagna (homam, havan or agnihotra) Invocation of deities Offering of herbs and ghee in holy fire - the subtle beneficial properties of sacrificed matter get amplified by heat energy of fire and the sound energy of the mantras.

Yagna

Yagna CloudsSoilPlantsManAir

Effects of Yagna Physical effects –Beneficial herbal constituents mix in air –Absorption of polluting gases in atmosphere –Reduction of disease causing bacteria and microbes in air –Reduction of contamination in water –Yagna bhasma rich in minerals

Effects of Yagna Physical effects –Effective treatment of diseases –Mental ailments Metaphysical/Spiritual aspects –Promoting benevolent tendencies - Daan –Harmony with nature through Devpujan –Confluence of spiritual beings - Sangatikaran

10/17/201514 Yagna Effects: Scriptural Claims & Scientific Hypothesis Yagna purifies the atmosphere by three fold effects –By removing the foul odor –By absorbing polluting gases as NO2, SO2 etc. –By killing the harmful germs/ microbes in the atmosphere –By enhancing the levels of negative ions in the surroundings

10/17/201515 Findings of Indoor Experiments (in New Delhi): Samples Provided & Tested by CPCB, Delhi Aggregate Bacterial Counts: Before, During and 1,2, 3 days after yagna

10/17/201516 Aggregate Fungi Counts Before, During and 1,2, 3 days after yagna

10/17/201517 Aggregate TMF Counts Before, During and 1,2, 3 days after yagna

10/17/201518 Aggregate Pathogen Counts Before, During and 1,2, 3 days after yagna

10/17/201519 Duration of Effect Summary of Statistical Inference: There is 92%, 88%, 87% and 79% decrease in counts of Bacteria, Fungi, TMF & Pathogens respectively with respect to the background even 7 days after yagna (Havan) for 30 minutes at home.

10/17/201520 yagna Vs. Non -yagna : A case Study on the Indoor Microbial Environment Two types of Indoor experiments were performed simultaneously in similar conditions in two houses in New Delhi. Two types of Indoor experiments were performed simultaneously in similar conditions in two houses in New Delhi. yagna Experiment: Done with proper rituals, Mantras, Havan Samagri etc. Non-yagna Experiment. Burning only same type and quantity of wood without any rituals, Mantras and Havan Samigri etc. (Pairs of such experiments repeated in different seasons).

10/17/201525 Harmful Gas Levels Before & 1, 2 Days After Large Scale yagna In Delhi

10/17/201526 Bacteria Count in Water Samples (100 ml each)

10/17/201527 Minerals in Bhasm of Yagna

Yagyopathy - An Approach To Total Health Oral medicines - Effect through digestion but not fully absorbed. –Negative impact on digestive system. Intravenous therapies - quick effect but risk of reaction and side effects.

Yagna - sublimation of herbs in sacrificial fire Yagna fume and vapours - inhalation through respiration and skin pores. Direct reach to each part of the body. Painless, risk less, harmonious effects

Some Interesting Findings - I Scientific Evaluation of Yagna-Therapy for Pulmonary TB [c.f. PhD Thesis of Dr. M. Raghuvanshi. Guides: Dr. Pranav Pandya, DS Univ. Haridwar & Dr. RR Joshi, IIT Bombay] Sputum of patients collected and evaluated in three ways: – –Control sample – not treated with any medicine – –Experiment sample – treated with fake Yagna fumes (burning medicinal woods) for 40 min – –Experiment sample – treated with fumes from a proper Yagna experiment (full process with mantra sounds) for 40 min Cultures from the three samples were incubated at 35deg C for 8weeks to study growth of tuberculosis bacteria

32 Control Sample (untreated) Result: High growth

33 ‘Experimental Sample’ Treated only by ‘Fumes’ of Burning Wood Result: Growth reduced only by 15%

34 Experimental Sample Treated by ‘output’ of Yagna Result: Significant reduction in growth (by 75%) Ref: In vitro test of an ethnobotanical inhalation therapy (Yagna- therapy) against pulmonary tuberculosis, M. Raghuvanshi, P. Pandya and R. R. Joshi, Phytothérapie, Volume 7, Number 5, 243-249

Some Interesting Findings -II Raghuvanshi M. et al. (2004): Yagyopathic Herbal Treatment of Pulmonary Tuberculosis Symptoms – A Clinical Trial. Alter. & Compl. Therapies V 10 (2), pp. 101-105.

Some Interesting Findings III Availability of medicines in blood – much longer with Yagna therapy 36 REF: Joshi R. R et al. (2006): Yagyopathy Vs Oral and I.V. Drug Administration: Evaluation for Pulmonary Tuberculosis using Compartment Modeling. J. Biological Systems V. 14(3), pp. 463-489.

Diseases that have shown positive results with Yagna Therapy Chikungunya (Villages in Rajasthan/MP) AIDS (Private hospital in Maharashtra) Mental diseases like stress, depression etc. (Brahmavarchas) Arthritis, backache (Villages in Faizabad) Asthma (Health camps in Jharkhand, Chandigarh, Pune, Bihar, Orissa etc.) Cancer(Brahmavarchas) Air Pollution! Extracted from Yagna Chikitsa, Brahmavarchas

38 Mental ailments: Summary of Results (% of Subjects Cured)

Conclusions Physical Yagna has immense environmental benefits Understanding true meaning of Yagna inspires harmony and symbiosis between man and Nature
