University of Louisville ON THE CUTTING EDGE Research for Energy Independence UofL: It’s Happening Here! 11/05/2008

2 What’s Happening Here? Let’s start with where we have been… Milestones 1970: UofL enters State Higher Education System 1970–97: Another mouth (expensive) to feed 1996: Boyle Report - Community agenda to grow/diversify economy–new cluster - Role of UofL 1997: HB1 -- Postsecondary Education Improvement Act -- Public Agenda – increase economic opportunity/Quality of life -- UofL shall be a premier nationally recognized metropolitan research university

3 Boyle Report – 1996 Community Agenda to Build Economy House Bill 1 - 1997 A Public Agenda for Higher Education to Build Economy Challenge for Excellence U of L 10 Year Plan 1998 - 2008 What’s Happening Here? So…

4 A Decade of Progress

5 Bucks for Brains – The Key to Our Transformation  Since 1998, Kentucky has invested $350 million in the program, $100 million at the University of Louisville  UofL matched with private funding to meet the General Assembly’s mandate to become a premier metropolitan research university  Hired more than 40 top researchers  Bucks for Brains researchers already have attracted more than $144 million in research funding, with an economic impact of more than $320 million  More than triple the state’s $100 million investment

6 A Proven Record for Research Innovation & Results James Graham Brown Cancer Center  $80M investment of university, public, and private funds  One of most robust pipelines of novel cancer drugs in US  First development of a tobacco-based cancer vaccine  We are now working on energy issues as aggressively

7 UofL Will Lead Renewable Energy Research Center  Ready to leverage public and private funds  “Seed” research infrastructure in place  Will create energy jobs with major economic impact  Will complement the UK’s coal based center for applied energy research (CAER)

8 Materials & Processes Solar Energy Conversion; Batteries; Solar and biofuels Micro Sensors MicroPower Sources Structural Materials Logistics of distributed power & infrastructure Translation to Automotive industry Faculty Ideas Microfabrication Center Institute for Advanced Materials & Renewable Energy (IAM-RE) Rapid Prototyping Center LODI Center for Transportation Energy conversion & storage devices Translational Research for Automobile Industry UofL’s Energy Research Enterprise

9 Expertise for the Automotive Sector  Battery Technology  Ability to develop lightweight structural materials to reduce weight of the car  Hybrid vehicle testing

10 Research for Energy Independence UofL Welcomes Collaboration with Argonne
