1 Multiplying decimals

2 What is the answer to 0.26 x 0.6? In order to work this out you must be able to multiply the whole numbers together In fact do just that. Pretend these two numbers are 26 and 6 and multiply them out long hand…

3 Multiplying decimals 2 6 x 6 36 (6 x 6) + 120 (6 x 20) 156 To get to this question we multiplied 0.26 by 100 and 0.6 by 10. So our answer has been multiplied by 1000. Now we must divide our answer by 1000 to get the answer to 0.26 x 0.6 So 0.26 x 0.6 = 0.156

4 The Rule The total number of decimal places in the question should be the same as the total number of decimal places in your answer Check it on your calculator! You only need to be able to multiply whole numbers and apply this rule to be able to multiply decimals!
