Types of Communication ❖ Verbal ➢ Most common form of communication ➢ This should be varied based on who is listening to the message ➢ Verbal varies by tone, volume, pace, and language style

Non Verbal Occurs constantly and its the first thing the mind registers Includes posture, facial expressions, gestures, and so much more Certain gestures/mannerism show how trustworthy someone is and if they are lying

Written Communication Written communication can be misinterpreted NEVER send anything if you are angry at the person who will receive the written communcation

Public Speaking

Audience Things you must do o Determine why you were chosen to speak o Figure out what you will talk about o Don’t directly read off the paper and use pictures on the slides to trigger your memory o Also tailor your speech to your audience  Example: Don’t read a graduate paper to elementary school students

Speech Creation Introductions Grabber – gain attention Thesis – introduce topic and give the audience a reason to listen Body Evidence 4 – 5 main points Conclusion Review the main points Call to action Conclusion grabber

Communicating with Groups Icebreakers o Breaks the initial group barriers  This makes communication easier o Energizes the members o Relaxes Members o Helps the group members to learn more about one another

Criticism Public Smile Smile, don’t defend yourself, listen, and mirror the criticism you receive The Boss: "Your presentations are too detailed. Just give me the elevator version and focus on the big business drivers." You: "You want me to do a better job of making brief presentations with a big-picture focus."

Give as Good as You Get It's not only difficult to get negative feedback, nobody likes to give it either Here are some guidelines for this tricky communication: Pair every negative with a positive Give feedback on only observable behavior, don’t speculate Extend yourself to maintain the relationship Be really specific about the problem, and a solution Go over what is wrong lightly, and put emphasis on what is working and what will work in the future
