2 Mount Rushmore: Beginnings The idea for Mount Rushmore carvings came from, who wanted to create an attraction that would have people visit 1. The idea for Mount Rushmore carvings came from Doane Robinson, who wanted to create an attraction that would have people visit South Dakota. Mr. Robinson met with sculptor in 1924 to discuss the carvings on Mt. Rushmore. 2. Mr. Robinson met with sculptor Gutzon Borglum in 1924 to discuss the carvings on Mt. Rushmore. Mr. Borglum was working on at the time he was contacted. 3. Mr. Borglum was working on Stone Mountain at the time he was contacted.

3 4. The Mount Rushmore sculpturing began in 1927. 5. The mountain was carved using dynamite, hammers, drills, and chisels. 6. Over 400 men & women worked on the project but no one died. 7. Workers climbed 700 steps a day to get to work at the top of the mountain.
