3 INTRODUCTION SMS was created during the late 1980s to work with a digital technology called GSM. The Norwegian engineers who invented it wanted a very simple messaging system that worked when users mobile phones were turned off or out of signal range. Most sources agree that the first SMS message was sent in the UK in 1992. SMS was created during the late 1980s to work with a digital technology called GSM. 4 Definition & Overview SMS stands for short message service. It is a globally accepted wireless service that enables the transmission of alphanumeric messages between mobile subscribers and external systems such as electronic mail, voice-mail systems etc. The "short" part refers to the maximum size of the text messages: 160 characters (letters, numbers or symbols in the Latin alphabet). 7 SMSC It is a combination of hardware & software responsible for storing& forwarding of short message between SME & mobile devices. This must have high reliability, subscriber capacity. STP It is a network element that allows interconnection over signaling system(ss7) links with network elements. 8 HLR It is a database used for permanent storage & management service profiles upon requirement by SMSC the HLR provides the routing information for the indicated subscriber. MSC The MSC will deliver the short message to the specific mobile subscriber through the proper base station. It performs switghing functions. 9 AIR INTERFACE The air interface is defined in each one of the different wireless technologies (GSM, TDMA, and CDMA). These standards specify how the voice or data signals are transferred from the MSC to the handset and back as well as the utilization of transmission frequencies, considering the available bandwidth and the system’s capacity constraints. 10 SMS comprises two basic point-to-point services: Mobile-originated short message (MO–SM) Mobile-terminated short message (MT–SM) MO-SM Short messages are transported from handset to SMSC & can be destined to other mobile subscriber.report is always returned to hand set conforming delivery. 14 BENEFITS OF SMS Delivery of message to multiple subscriber at a time. Guaranteed message delivery. Low cost communication. Delivery satisfaction. SMS CRITICISMS We need to pay for it. Speedy message delivery is not guaranteed. It is strictly for sending text message for sending picture video or music files. Delivery of message to multiple subscriber at a time. 15 SMS ALTERNATIVES Using EMS we can send format text, sound effects, small pictures & icons. MMS allows u to send animations, audio & video files in addition text. To make delivery faster, networks are using more new next-generation technologies such GPRS. Using EMS we can send format text, sound effects, small pictures & icons.
