…….A history of the last 21 years
The beginning.. In 1982 a group of dietitians and company representatives interested in nutrition support came together for an inaugural meeting in Leeds. Doug Scott ( then manager of Dietetic and Nutrition Services at Lincoln County Hospital )was the initiator of the meeting and the numbers attending ( 67 ) far exceeded his and everyone else's expectations. The group established itself as the Enteral and Parenteral Interest Group and Doug became acting Chairman.
1983 – 1985 ….Those initial years A constitution was drawn up and the first AGM was held in Sept Doug Scott was voted in as Chairman and other members of the committee were elected. Over the first few years Committee members included: Christine RussellAnn MicklewrightKay CarrPat BaconPat Howard Doug Scott Vera Todorovic ………and Tina Morley, Sue Kilby (Scottish Rep), Rita Hopkin
1983 – 1985 A vision – act as a network for dietitians interested in and involved in nutritional support and to raise awareness of the need for proper nutritional support of patients. A logo A commitment to developing guidelines Dietitians involvement in Nutrition Support Microbial aspects of Enteral Tube Feeding The Newsletter -Newsline
1983 – 1985 Other activities 1 st Clinical Update Weekend held in Oct 1985 at the Trent Regional Training Centre Working with the BDA to raise awareness of the specialist expertise required by dietitians involved in burns units, intensive care units and in research.
1986 – 1990 ……Expanding our Horizons Pat Howard takes on the Chairmanship of PENG. Education and Training Biannual clinical meetings Clinical Update becomes a national course from 1986 Trent Student Dietitian training days on Enteral and Parenteral Nutriiton established by Ann, Vera and Doug Establishing European links The Parenteral and Enteral European Dietitians Society is established and Christine becomes the first Chairman
1986 – 1990 Working in partnership with others Industry…..establish the Golden Jubilee Award with support from Merck in British Standards Institute….Doug acts as PENG rep for issues concerning minimum safety standards for enteral feeding systems. Joint working party with the Paediatric Group…..to produce a report on paediatric feeding products.
1986 – 1990 Publications In 1989 the first edition of the Pocket Guide is produced. Student Guidelines on nutrition support were published Joint document produced with the BDA on management of nutritionally compromised patients in hospital. Newsletter gets a new look and is renamed Pen- Lines
1986 – 1990 Surveys In 1987 the Committee published the first report on Current Trends in Home Enteral Feeding in the UK As a result and with an initial grant from Abbott the UK Home Enteral Feeding Register was established and managed by Ann Micklewright until it became established as BANS within BAPEN Committee Doug retires from the Committee in 1990 to move out of the Health Service. New members join the committee during this period Moira DixonRosemary Richardson And Alan Torrance
1991 – a bigger vision for nutritional support Joining with others Professor John Lennard – Jones leads a Working Party on the The Kings Fund Report - A Positive Approach to Nutrition as Treatment. Christine and Pat are the PENG representatives. BAPEN is established as a result of this report and PENG is one of the five founder groups. It has representatives on Council and various working parties. Committee changes There are three new chairman during this period, Christine Russell, Rosemary Richardson and Ann Micklewright. New committee members include: ……. and Liz Gilmour, Claire Wright, Jacklyn Jones, Nicola Stewart, Janet Baxter Carole Anne McAtearLiz WeekesCarole Glencorse
1991 – 1995 Clinical Update The first BDA course to be validated in Now well established and recognised as the course for dietitians to attend if involved in nutritional support. Publications A new logo New look Penlines Development of Standards relating to nutritional support
1991 – 1995 Awards Industry continue to support PENG and PENG also offers its own bursaries to members Surveys Participates in a survey to support the BDAs discussions with the ACBS on the use of enteral tube feeds and sip feeds. At the time the ACBS wanted to de list some of these products. As a result of the survey no products de listed.
…moving from strength to strength Carole Anne McAtear becomes Chairman in 1996 A new logo for a new image Membership steadily increasing year on year..now over 350 New Committee members include Clare Soulsby, Catriona McMasters, Sarah Whittingham, Lisa Cooper, Lyn Douglas, Paula Murphy and Jo Prickett ….And then Clare Soulsby leaves for Australia to pursue other activities…
Review philosophy and aims New publicity to share this with the members and potential new members Working in partnership with Universities and liaising on academic programmes relating to nutritional support Second edition of the Pocket Guide by now an established text for dietitians working in clinical nutrition. Carole Anne leads a Working Party on the BAPEN publication Current Perspectives in adult enteral nutrition Audit is an integral part of the work of the Committee First Parenteral Nutrition Course was established
….continuing the journey forward By now we have a new logo! And a website! New guidelines for student dietitians on nutritional support developed in conjunction with the universities Contributing to major publications Proud to have as a member and Ex Chairman an Honorary Professor Rosemary Richardson About 450 members Third edition of the Pocket Guide New look PENlines..and new committee members Ailsa Kennedy, Pete Turner and Alex Leckie
How has it been then? …….not bad!…nothing that a good game of poker cant sort out!..what can you say!!..another drink..that will help!!
