3. Introduction Last week we studied how there was deception in the lives of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But Joseph lived a life of honesty, faithfulness, and God was always with him as he endured through many trials. God has always promised to be with His disciples in their trials (Mt. 28:20; He. 13:5). There are many similarities between Joseph and Jesus’ life which we will examine today and make applications to us (1 Th. 5:21-22).

4. (Joseph) Hated by His Brothers Why was Joseph hated by his brothers? (Gen. 37:2-4). Jacob loved him more than all his sons and was given a varicolored tunic (Gen. 37:2-4). They hated him even more for his dreams in which they understood the meaning was that they would have to bow down to him. (Gen. 37:5-11) Joseph was hated by his brothers through no fault of his own (the dreams came from God and his father loved him more than them).

5. (Jesus) Hated by His Brothers & the World The brothers of Jesus did not believe in Him even though they saw the miracles. (John 7:3-5; Mark 6:1-6; Mt. 6:24; 12:30) The world hated Jesus because He testified that its deeds were evil (John 7:6-7; 3:19-20). Jesus warned the disciples that because He chose them, the world would hate them. (John 15:18-20) So don’t be surprised if the world hates you, but make sure that you don’t hate your brothers in Christ (1 John 3:13-15).

Reuben suggests that they not shed blood but throw into a pit so that he might rescue him. (Gen. 37:21-24) While Reuben is away, Judah suggests that they sell Joseph him into slavery to the Ishmaelites and they do it (Gen. 37:25-28). -34 They dip Joseph’s tunic in goat’s blood and deceive their father (Gen. 37:31-33).

The chief priests gave Judas 30 pieces of silver to betray Jesus (the price of a slave). (Matthew 26:14-15) Satan is plotting to betray us so that we will die in our sins (John 8:44; 1 Pet. 5:8). Jesus Christ overcame the devil so that we don’t have to fear death and we can resist him. (1 Peter 5:9; Heb. 2:14-15).

Potiphar’s wife tempts Joseph to commit adultery many times and he refuses to sin against God (Gen. 39:7-10). She falsely accuses Joseph of sin when he flees leaving his coat behind and is thrown in prison (Gen. 39:11-20). Instead of complaining, he has a good attitude & supervises the prisoners (Gen. 39:21-23).

9. Jesus (Tempted to Sin, Falsely Accused) Jesus is tempted to sin by the devil Jesus is tempted to sin by the devil (Mt. 4:3ff). He asked, “Which one of you convicts me of sin” (John 8:46)? The religious leaders tried to get false testimony against Him but found none (Mk. 14:55-59). Jesus was tempted but did not sin and is able to come to our aid when it happens to us. (Heb. 4:15; 7:26; 1 Pet. 2:22; 1 John 3:5). If you are falsely accused, remember that Jesus is with you (Mt. 28:20; Heb. 13:5).

10. Conclusion Consider the similarities between the life of Joseph and Jesus. They were both hated by brethren. They were plotted by their enemies to die. They were tempted to sin and falsely accused. The devil wants you to compromise with the world (who hates you) so that you will sin & go to hell (1 John 2:15-17; Rev. 21:8) but Jesus died for you so that you might be saved & go to heaven (Ro. 5:8-9; Heb. 2:9).
