An adaptation is a body part or behavior that helps an animal survive in its environment Adaptation can help an animal breathe, catch food, or hide. All animals are adapted to live in certain habitats. Animals that cannot adapt will die out.

12
We can separate adaptations into two categories: Physica l AND Behavi oral

14
Physical adaptations are body structures. Physical adaptations allow an animal to find and consume food, defend itself, and to reproduce its species. Hey! I’m a walking stick. I look just like a stick you’d find on the ground. © A. Weinberg

Physical adaptation Camouflage (use of color in blend into surroundings) The chameleon can change color. Other animals’ colors and patterns match their usual surroundings.

Mimicry (looking or sounding like another living organism) The Monarch is poisonous and warns predators with its bright colors. Poisonous Not poisonous Physical adaptation I’m the Monarch! I’m the Viceroy!

Body coverings & parts (claws, eyes, beaks, feet, skin, skulls, teeth) Physical adaptations The elephant’s trunk is a physical adaptation that helps it to clean itself, eat, drink, and to pick things up.

Behavioral Adaptations are actions that allow animals to meet their needs & avoid danger (from other animals or from the environment)

Examples include: hibernation, migration, hunting in a pack, being nocturnal, eating plants Behavioral Adaptations are animals’ actions. Remember that Physical Adaptations are body structures.

Write about each term in your own words. OR Draw a picture (in color) to show what you know about that term. OR Do a mix of both.
29
Read about an animal. Create a left side page to describe the physical and behavioral adaptations of the animal. Options include but are not limited to: -A foldable -A fable or children’s story -A narrative from the point-of-view of the animal -A graphic organizer (i.e. concept map)
