1 Chapter 6 4 th Commandment “Honor your Father and your Mother.”

2 Introduction  Placement of this commandment is important - it opens up the 2nd part of the Decalogue.  After honoring God, we must honor our parents who gave us life and handed on to us the knowledge of God.

3 Introduction  First 3 commandments are concerned with how we love God.  The remaining 7 address our interactions with other humans. other humans.  Love of neighbor is learned at home first!

4 On the Role of the Christian Family in the Modern World Familiaris Consortio by Pope John Paul II Encourages the family to be a “community of life and love” The family is a “domestic church” (a microcosm of all the Church should be) - a place where love is taught & learned

5 Family Nurtures relationships that bond people together Is a “school” where people learn how to love and treat their neighbors “Mutual service” - love is freely given and received

6 Families  are the heart of society and the heart of the Church  build upon the Church

7 Family  God’s plan has established the family as an “intimate community of life and love.”  Families, at their core, are about love: it is the role of the family to give and receive love, which reveals God’s love for us and Christ’s love for the Church.”

15 There is no family that does not know how selfishness discord tension conflict violently attack & at times mortally wound its own communion: there are many & varied forms of division in families.

16 But, at the Same Time…  Every family is called by the God of peace to have the joyous & renewing experience of RECONCILIATON –Communion reestablished –Unity restored

20 Assisted Living: When Its Your Turn to Care for Your Parents by Kathy Saunder  Mutual Service: –just as parents provided for their child’s every need (food, clothing, shelter, and love) there may come a time when the child must provide these for the parents –this is not without its stresses, but reaffirms our hope of practicing genuine love in the world

22 Taking Care of Elderly Parents  Illustrates the commandment to honor our father and mother.  This can cause family strain and tension amongst siblings.

23 Taking Care of Elderly Parents  Everyday is an opportunity to be compassionate and to honor your father and mother.  Yet, there is a great joy of being able to care for your parents & journey with them to their death.
