1 Investigating the scene! You have become a detective for a day. You need to figure out what happened on each scene and the only things you have to help you are these pictures. Use the questions to help you figure it out.

7 What is a PRIMARY SOURCE?

9 A Primary Source can even be an object that was created during the time about that specific time period. A German U-Boat

10 What is a SECONDARY SOURCE?

11 SECONDARY SOURCES Interprets and analyzes primary sources. These sources are one or more steps removed from the event. Secondary sources may have pictures, quotes or graphics of primary sources in them.

12 PUBLICATIONS: Textbooks, magazine articles, histories, criticisms, commentaries, encyclopedias. Examples - Some Types of Secondary Sources Include: A journal/magazine article which interprets or reviews previous findings. A history textbook. A book about the effects of WWI.

13 FYI: A Secondary Source is an account that was created from a primary source and may include the author's opinion or bias.

18 Copy of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation Primary or Secondary? What is it? Primary Although it is a copy, it has not been altered in any way. It is firsthand information from the time period being studied.

20 Newspaper Article Primary or Secondary? What is it? Secondary It may contain pictures, or quotes, but the article itself is being reported secondhand.

22 Book about American Presidents Primary or Secondary? What is it? Secondary This book is a critique of American history. The author may have written the book after examining primary sources, but the book itself is secondhand.

23 Diary Primary or Secondary? What is it? Primary Although it may be written with a certain bias, it is written during the time period studied and gives a firsthand account.

24 Gettysburg Address Primary or Secondary? What is it? Primary Although it is a copy, it has not been altered. It was written during the time period studied.

25 Original tea cup from 1700s Primary or Secondary? What is it? Primary It is an original artifact from the time period studied.

26 Wikipedia Article Primary or Secondary? What is it? Secondary This is secondhand information. Wikipedia is especially unreliable.

27 Activity Time: Now I want you to look at some items in groups. They will be placed around the room. Take a few minutes to look at each of them and fill in the chart I have given to you. Please be kind to my items as many students will need to use them!
