INTERNATIONAL CLASSIFICATION OF DISEASES ASSOC. PROF. D-R PETKO SALCHEV PhD

Factors influencing the development of ICD-Х Extensive usage of ICD requiring a rethinking of its structure; The need to create a stable and adaptable classification which doesn’t need fundamental restructuring for a number of years; A necessity for conducting consultations among many organizations and countries; Field testing required.

Common principles of disease classification It should be restricted to a certain number of mutually exempt headings; Each diseases or pathological state should occupy a strictly defined place in the list of headings; The specific disease should be positioned under a separate heading; It should possess hierarchical structure.

Diseases are grouped in the following way (according to William Farr) Epidemic diseases; Constitutional or general diseases; Local diseases grouped according to anatomical localization; Diseases related to development; Traumatic diseases.

Disease classes and codes according to ICD-9 and ICD-10 ICD-9ICD-10 Class I. Infectious and parasitic diseases (001–139) Class II. Tumors (140–239) Class III. Diseases of the endocrine glands, nutrition, metabolism and immunity disorders (240–279) Class IV. Diseases of the blood and haemopoesis (280–289) Class V. Psychic disorders (290-319) Class VI. Diseases of the nervous system and sensory organs (320–389) Class VII. Diseases of the haemopoetic organs (390–459) Class VIII. Pulmonary diseases (460–519) Class IХ. Trauma and poisonings (800–999) Additional classifications: External causes of trauma and poisonings (code Е) Factors, influencing health and the motives defining the demand for medical help (code V) Class I. Some infectious and parasitic diseases (А00–В99) Class II. Tumors (C00–D48) Class III. 6 Other types of classifications used in practice Classifications based on diagnoses Non-diagnostic classifications

Classifications based on diagnoses – International classification of tumor diseases (ICD–О) – 1990, published by WHO – International Coding Index for Dermatology – 1978 – Application of the International Classification of Diseases to Dentistry and Stomatology – ICD-DA – Application of the International Classification of Diseases to Rheumatology and Orthopedics – ICD – R& O – The ICD-10 Classification of Mental and Behavioral Disorders: clinical descriptions and diagnostic guidelines – 1992

Non-diagnostic classifications – On the basis of procedures – International classification of procedures in medicine (ICPM) – 1978. – On the basis of disease consequences – International classification of disorders, disability and handicap - 1980.
