Kentucky Maryland Nevada New Jersey Oregon Rhode Island Vermont Washington District of Columbia Over 40 states have shown interest in the standards, and as of March 2015, twelve states and the District of Columbia have adopted the standards: California, Delaware, Kansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and the District of Columbia (D.C.). West Virginia is almost there – they are still discussing the Global Warming/Climate Change issues.

4 California Next Generation Science Standards Systems Implementation PLAN
In November 2014 the California State Board of Education adopted the CA NGSS Systems Implementation Plan

5 The Plan Includes Three phases of implementation
Awareness Transition Implementation Timeline of significant events Suggestions and opportunities for The California Department of Education (CDE) Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and Community Stakeholders and Support Providers 8 guiding strategies This Plan includes: Three phases of implementation Awareness Transition And Implementation A Timeline of significant events Suggestions and opportunities for implementation for all stakeholders: The California Department of Education (CDE) Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and Community Stakeholders and Support Providers And 8 guiding strategies

6 Guiding Strategies Professional Learning Instructional Resources
Professional Learning Instructional Resources Assessment Expanded Learning Postsecondary and Business Resources Communication Coalition Building The eight guiding strategies include: Facilitate high quality professional learning opportunities for educators to ensure that every student has access to teachers who are prepared to teach and facilitate student learning to the levels of rigor and depth required by the CA NGSS.  Provide CA NGSS-aligned instructional resources designed to meet the diverse needs of all students. Develop and transition to CA NGSS-aligned assessments that supports the improvement of teaching and learning and provide information that may be used for accountability.  Collaborate with parents, guardians, and the early childhood and expanded learning communities to integrate the CA NGSS into programs and activities beyond the K–12 school setting. Collaborate with the postsecondary and business communities and additional stakeholders to ensure that all students are prepared for success in career and college.  Seek, create, and disseminate resources to support stakeholders as the CA NGSS systems implementation moves forward.  Design and establish systems of effective communication regarding CA NGSS among stakeholders to continuously identify areas of need and disseminate information. Build coalitions to ensure a consistent message and to sustain momentum during implementation.

10 Symposium #1 What Did We Learn?
In Phase I we focused on Awareness of the Next Generation Science Standards and the shifts in teaching and learning that need to occur. We went over the format of the standards and introduced the NGSS Appendices; discussed connections between NGSS and the CCSS; provided a tool to begin planning for 3-D instruction; and we had a strand specifically for administrative support.

11 Sessions for the Entire Team
Symposium #2 Sessions for the Entire Team In Phase 2, we have some sessions that continue the work from Phase I, and some that delve deeper in the dimensions of NGSS. The next four slides describe sessions that are designed for everyone to attend.

12 NGSS Conceptual Shifts
1. K-12 Science Education Should Reflect the Interconnected Nature of Science as it is Practiced and Experienced in the Real World. 2. The Next Generation Science Standards are student performance expectations – NOT curriculum. 3. The Science Concepts in the NGSS Build Coherently from K–12. 4. The NGSS Focus on Deeper Understanding of Content as well as Application of Content. 5. Science and Engineering are Integrated in the NGSS, from K–12. 6. The NGSS are designed to prepare students for college, career, and citizenship. 7. The NGSS and Common Core State Standards (English Language Arts and Mathematics) are Aligned. In NGSS 103: You will Deepen Your Understanding of the NGSS by engaging with the Conceptual Shifts. You will learn about the importance of developing a professional learning plan to prepare teachers for the NGSS, and discuss the types of administrative and system supports necessary to implement these learning plans.

13 The Tool Phase 2 Concept Preliminary Learning Sequence Template
5E Learning Sequence Stu Tch Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 In The Tool Phase 2: You will build on Roll Out #1, incorporating a new tool to design a learning sequence that addresses the 3D aspect of the NGSS.

14 But What Does It Look Like?
This session takes you to the next step after you develop your tool. You will apply the tool to a learning sequence for grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 or and experience what the learning looks like in a classroom over a multi- day lesson.

15 Teaching Through the Practices
Asking questions and defining problems Developing and using models Planning and carrying out investigations Analyzing and interpreting data Using mathematics, information and computer technology, and computational thinking Constructing explanations and designing solutions Engaging in argument from evidence Obtaining, evaluating, and communicating information In Teaching Through the Practices you will experience the coherent integration of the NGSS Scientific and Engineering Practices from the observation of a phenomenon to constructing an explanation for those observations. This session focuses on three practices: 1) developing and revising models, 2) engaging in argument from evidence, and 3) constructing explanations. You can attend either a session targeted for elementary (grades K-5) or secondary (grades 6-12).

16 Symposium #2 Sessions of Choice
The next four slides describe sessions that will require you to make a choice of which to attend. If you have a team, you might consider each attending a different session.

17 Crosscutting Concepts
Patterns Cause and effect Scale, proportion, and quantity Systems and system models Energy and matter Structure and function Stability and change In The 3rd Dimension - Crosscutting Concepts Session you will Learn how the seven crosscutting concepts of the Next Generation Science Standards deepen understanding of the Practices and Core Ideas and lead to productive inquiry. This hands-on workshop will explore ways to help students use the crosscutting concepts to think like scientists and engineers.

18 Earth and Space Sciences
High School Chemistry Physical Sciences Life Sciences Earth and Space Sciences Physics Engineering Integrated Science 1 Integrated Science 3 In the High School Session you will review the policy issues related to the implementation of NGSS at the high school level and Explore and compare sample HS course sequences that might be appropriate for your district. Integrated Science 2

19 Administrator Strand In the Administrator Strand you will learn how to support the implementation of NGSS at your school site and in your district through exploring various implementation resources and collaborating with other administrative leaders. This session emphasizes strategies to move from awareness to transition.

20 Engineering in a Three Dimensional Lesson
Defining a Problem Designing a Solution Optimizing that Design Solution In “Engineering in a Three Dimensional Lesson” you will experience the NGSS Engineering Design Core Ideas of defining a problem, designing a solution, and optimizing that design solution.

21 Principles of the NRC Framework and Guidelines for Our work
Children are born investigators Understanding builds over time Science and engineering require both knowledge and practice Connecting to students’ interests and experiences is essential Focus on core ideas and practices Promote equity The National Research Council wrote “A Framework for K-12 Science Education” in This is the document on which the national NGSS were built. The Framework is based on these basic and critical principals: Children are born investigators Understanding builds over time Science and engineering require both knowledge and practice Connecting to students’ interests and experiences is essential Focus on core ideas and practices Promote equity

22 Enjoy the Symposium! We hope you grow and network and enjoy these two days of professional learning. Thank you.
