Spanaway Lake High School What is Digital Citizenship? “ The norms of behavior with regard to technology (Ribble, Bailey & Ross, 2). It helps parents, educators, and technology leaders help students learn how to use technology appropriately in a technology driven world. Safety Here are a few ways to be safe while using your devices both at school and at home Create different passwords that are more complex and keep records of the passwords. Keep software up-to-date for virus protection. Have at least 3 places that you have backed-up your documents. Do not give out your information to people that you have not met in person or know absolutely is safe. Remember people can put on a great act for the “digital stage” When using websites look for privacy policies or privacy seals. To Post or not to Post… Here are some questions to ask yourself before posting. Is it an appropriate photo? Is everyone okay with it being posted? Will it raise issues between friends or family? Is it necessary for everyone to see? Do I want my future employ, spouse, or child to see this photo? When will you put down the phone to view the world? Do you know what goes takes place on your device? 2013-2014 Are you being secure with your information online? Commerce Things to look out for while purchasing online. Privacy Policies and privacy seals Don’t buy the first time looking at a product. Remember that you are the target audience. Talk to parents before making the purchase. When purchasing online, use a credit card versus a debit card. Credit cards do not have a direct line to your bank account. Are the “Right” people taking your money? Cyberbullying Definition: The use of digital media tools such as the internet and cell phones to deliberately upset or harass someone else. (Commonsense) Strategies against Cyberbullying The Target Don’t respond or retaliate, Ignore and block the bully, or tell trusted friends and adults. Sending text messages during class time Using your cellular device while at dinner, lunch, in conversation, movie theatre, etc. Strategies to avoid inappropriate Uses Give your self certain times of the day you can be on your phone either to play games, text or talk with friends.
