3 3 VA Education Programs  Montgomery GI Bill—Active Duty (MGIB, or Chapter 30) –Initial active duty service after 6-30-85 –$1,200 military pay reduction  Montgomery GI Bill—Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR, or Chapter 1606) –6 year Selected Reserve Obligation –Finish initial active duty training –Funded by Department of Defense (DoD)

4 4 VA Education Programs  Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP, or Chapter 1607) –Established in 2005 by Department of Defense (DoD) –Designed to provide education assistance to members of the Reserve components called or ordered to active duty in response to a war or national emergency –Minimum of 90 days continuous active duty –VA administers the program and pays benefit from funds contributed by DoD

5 5 VA Education Programs Survivors’ & Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA, or Chapter 35) –Spouses & children of Veterans or service members who: Died While on Active Duty, or Permanently & Totally Disabled, or Died From Service-Connected Disability, or are MIA, POW, or Hostages VA determines has a service-connected permanent and total disability; and –At the time of VA’s determination is a member of the Armed Forces who is hospitalized or receiving outpatient medical care, services, or treatment; and –Is likely to be discharged or released from service for this service connected disability

6 66 VA Education Programs  Post-9/11 GI Bill (CH 33) Individuals who served on active duty after 09/10/01 for an aggregate period of at least 90 days. Note: Exceptions are made for individuals discharged due to a service connected disability and serving at least 30 continuous days on active duty after 9/10/01.

7 77 Post-9/11 GI Bill Eligibility Period  Eligible for benefits for 15 years from:  Date of last discharge;  Or Release from active duty of at least 90 continuous days.  Entitled to 36 months of benefits  Limited to 48 months of combined benefits under educational assistance programs administered by VA. NOTE: Individuals transferring to the Post-9/11 GI Bill from the Montgomery GI Bill (chapter 30) will be limited to the amount of remaining chapter 30 entitlement.

9 Veterans Retraining Assistance Program (VRAP) VOW to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 begins on July 1, 2012 Offers 12 months of training assistance to unemployed Veterans between the ages of 35 and 60 Receive up to 12 months of assistance at the full-time rate under Montgomery GI-Bill-Active Duty ($1,473 per mo.) Programs:  VA approved program at a community college or technical school that leads to an Associates, Non- College Degree, or Certification
