1 2-2 Relating graphs to events
OBJECTIVE: INTERPRET AND SKETCH GRAPHS FROM STORIES; CLASSIFYING DATA AS DISCRETE OR CONTINUOUS MISS BATTAGLIA – ALGEBRA 1 CP

2 Warm up Would you expect a positive correlation, negative correlation, or no correlation? Amount of Free Time vs. Number of Classes Taken Snow Shovel Sales vs. Amount of Snowfall Number of Calories Burned vs. Time Exercising

3 transportation A commute home from school
combines walking with taking the subway. The graph describes the trip by relating the variables time and total distance. Describe what the graph shows. Explain why the section of the graph showing the person waiting for the subway is flat. Why is the subway section steeper than the walking sections?

4 BIKE RIDE… A friend mistakenly states that this graph describes a person bicycling up and then down a hill. What would you say to this friend to help clear up the misconception?

5 travel The Shermans are visiting friends several miles from home. On the way, they stop to buy juice. After a few hours, they return home. Sketch a graph to describe the trip. Label the sections.

6 example Sketch a graph to describe your height from the ground on a roller coaster ride. Explain the activity in each section of the graph. Be creative!

7 Classifying data Continuous Data Discrete Data
Continuous data usually involve a measurement, such as temperature, length, or weight. (In a graph, there are no spaces between points) Discrete data involve a count, such as a number of people or objects. (In a graph, there are spaces between points) Continuous Data Discrete Data

8 example Classify the data as continuous or discrete. Explain your reasoning and sketch the graph of each situation. a) Height of a plant for five days b) class attendance for 5 days

9 Create a story for the graph given to your group.
classwork Create a story for the graph given to your group.

10 homework Pg #2–8 even , 9a, 12–16 even
