3 SMS (Short Message Service) Communication service standardized in the GSM mobile communication system. Used as a synonym for a text message or the act of sending a text message. Defined by GSM standards for interchange of short text messages of up to 160 characters. Over 740 billion text messages sent in the US during first half of 2009. (CTIA - The Wireless Association, Semi-Annual Survey 2009)

4 MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) Standard way to send messages that include multimedia content to and from mobile phones. Extends the core SMS Indirect delivery by triggering handset to download from an embedded URL. Problems with Configuration, Content Adaptation & Incompatibility WAP Push & Delivery Charges Distribution Lists & Bulk Messaging

5 Barcode Applications Camera equipped phones can be used as a reader Problems of camera resolution vs information Related to MMS in regards to redirection Often used as hardlink (physical hyper-link) Examples: Microsoft Tag, QR Code (Pepsi) Sample format of a 2D barcode
