Ethnicity Debate between two views of ethnicity Primordialist Real bonds that tie people together in real groups Constructivist Everything is invented, artificial Imagined communities, invented traditions
Emic-etic distinction Emic view of ethnicity and ethnic groups –Real social groups with real differences from other groups –Ways of being are not easily cast off, part an inherent identity, essential to person and group Etic view of ethnicity –These groups have changed over time, and the defining criteria are not fixed and unchanging –Every group (culture, nation, ethnicity) is hybrid, no pure forms
Ritual and ethnicity Ritual provides the content of ethnicity, but in the process it does not essentialize ethnicity. -Metcalf, p103
