3. Pontius Pilate –In office of governor from A.D, 26-36 –Not liked by the Jews –Understood the Jewish structures –Indecisive, weak & compromising man –His concern was to protect himself, his job & Rome –Afraid of the crowd & more of the prisoner (Jesus) –At least 3 times he announced that Jesus was not guilty of any crime –Still he refused to release Him

4. “What is the Accusation?” (18:28-32) –Customary for the Roman governor to be in Jerusalem during Passover in case there were any outbursts of nationalism. Charges (Luke 23:2) He lead the nation astray He apposed paying tribute to caesar He claimed to be the Jewish Messiah and King. Pilate not anxious to be involved in a Jewish court case Jews allowed to try Him under their law If so, Jesus would be killed by stoning

5. God determined that Jesus be crucified (3:14, 8:20, 12:32-33)Jews bore the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13) Jesus had to hang on a tree (Deut. 21:22-23) “Are you the King of the Jew?” (18:33-38) –“It is as you say” (Matt. 18:34, John 18:33-38) –“Did you say yourself or did others tell you about Me?” Pilate called Jesus “king” at least 4 times (34) during the trial. His kingdom doesn’t come from the authority of the world nor doesn’t depend on worldly or fleshly means to advance

Where did Jesus derive His authority was the Pilate’s concern –His humanity (birth) & deity (into the world) His ministry to bear witness unto the truth –Roman weapon was the sword & the Lord’s weapon was the truth, the sword of the Spirit What is truth? –Pilate’s declaration: “I found no fault in Him” –Religious leaders were persistent in accusing Jesus »Jesus was silent –Jesus from Galilee –Herod’s responsibility »Herod found no fault – Him & sent Him back to Pilate »Result: Herod & Pilate became friends

7. “Shall I Release the King of the Jews?” (18:39-19:7) –Pilate would punish Jesus & release a prisoner Jesus or Barabbas –Barabbas: a robber (18:40), notorious prisoner (Matt. 27:16), and insurrectionist & murderer (Luke 23:19) –The crowd asked for Barabbas New Approach: sympathy –“Crucify Him!” Scourge: a leather whip with lead, bones, & knotted

8. He was innocent yet He was treated as guilty on the cross Jesus paid the price for the sins of the world, declared the love of God & defended the holiness & justice of God. We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the son of God(19:7) “Where are you from?” (19:8-16) –Pilate responded to the phrase “the Son of God” Pilate’s wife’s dream (Matt. 27:19) –Pilate was more concerned about maintaining peace in Jerusalem than in spiritual truth

9. –Jesus’ last world to Pilate: His faith in the Father & His surrender to His will. –Jesus responded that Pilate’s authority was delegated to him from God –“He that delivered one up unto thee?” Caiaphas –Vs. Pilate –Pilate continued to find a way to release Jesus Jews accused Pilate of being a traitor to Caesar – Pilate washed his hands before the crowd

10. –Sixth hour-Roman time (Matt. 27:24) starting at midnight; in Mark, 3 rd hour meaning 9 a.m. using Jewish time –Preparation refers to preparation for Sabbath beginning at sundown on Friday –The crowd’s last word “We have no king but Caesar!” Human standpoint: the trial was the greatest crime and tragedy in history. Divine standpoint: it was the fulfillment of prophecy and the accomplishment of the will of God.
