3 Background: Bergen Communiqué (May 2005): „The Bologna Process should be based on the principle of sustainable development.“

4 What does it mean? The sustainable development perspective is very important in the following up on all parts of the Bologna Process.

5 How to implement the Bergen Communiqué? COPERNICUS-CAMPUS is taking up leadership and is developing strategic guidelines for the incorporation of sustainable development into the European Higher Education Area in order to support higher education institutions in relation to the Bologna Process.

6 The COPERNICUS Guidelines shall provide strategic assistance on how to integrate sustainable development into the Bologna Process in the following areas: What are the objectives of the COPERNICUS Guidelines?

7 Guidelines on how to integrate sustainable development into the degree structure (modules)

8 Guidelines on how to integrate sustainable development into the qualifications framework and learning outcomes

9 Guidelines on how to integrate sustainable development into quality assurance

10 Guidelines to improve the social dimension and the attractiveness of the European Higher Education Area

11 The elaboration process of the COPERNICUS Guidelines embraces three main steps: How does the process look like?

12 A public consultation (ended 15 February 2006) A group of experts will draft a first set of the Guidelines Finally, the Draft Guidelines will be discussed at an International Conference entitled “Sustainable Development in the European Higher Education Area”, to be held 11-14 October 2006 at the University of Oldenburg (Germany).

13 The COPERNICUS Guidelines will be channelled officially into the Bologna Process and will be on the agenda as an item for consideration at the next Ministerial Conference to the Bologna Process in London in 2007. What happens with the COPERNICUS Guidelines?
