Lesson 1 “The Cherokee”

Cherokee Early Years The Cherokee grew corn, squash, beans, and other crops. They hunted and trapped animals with bow and arrows. Also, they gathered fruits and nuts.

Before the Europeans Came… Many Cherokee hunted much of their food.

A Consensus The Cherokee had a government called a consensus. What is a consensus? A consensus is a method of decision making. The Cherokee would debate issues until ALL could come to an agreement. Was this a good idea? Why or why not? Yes All would agree No one would fight after a decision was made No Might take a long time Might never agree

Changes in Cherokee culture in order to fit in They learned how to read and write in their own language. President George Washington told them to farm more to fit in with their surroundings. Many Cherokee built large farms. They went to school to learn the English language. Even though they tried to change, the conflict did not end!

Trail of Tears This was a very sad time for the Cherokee. The United States Government came in and forced the Cherokee off their land because gold had been found on their land. They made them move west to what is now Oklahoma. They walked hundreds of miles. They did not have enough food or warm clothing. Thousands of Cherokee died.

Those that did not go on the Trail of Tears Several hundred Cherokee stayed in the Southeast and hid out in the mountains of North Carolina. They became known as the Eastern Cherokee. Those that went to what is now Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears became known as the Western Cherokee.
