6 ELA Literacy/Literature Split ELA Panel Recommendation: “The study of literature and language should be emphasized and elevated as an endeavor separate from literacy.” Literature Detailed Literature Standards and Performance Indicators related to literature and literary text Literature as a content area Literacy Will include the Standards and Performance Indicators that relate to literacy (for example, phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, comprehension, etc.)

7 Viewing/Presenting—New to ELA Standards Viewing: Effective viewing involves the ability to comprehend, analyze, and respond to visual texts in both print and non-print media. Presenting: Effective presenting involves selecting, synthesizing, and organizing information to convey a message that includes visual media.

8 Pew Internet & American Life Project: Writing, Technology and Teens—2008 All teens write for school, and 93% of teens say they write for their own pleasure. 85% of teens ages 12-17 engage at least occasionally in some form of electronic personal communication, which includes text messaging, sending email or instant messages, or posting comments on social networking sites. 60% of teens do not think of these electronic texts as "writing.“ http://pewresearch.org/pubs/808/writing-technology- and-teens

12 Next Steps Summer/Fall 2009 ESL Workgroup continues to meet to develop curriculum guidance for English Language Learners. Call for Statewide comment on proposed ELA/ESL Standards. Tentative date—September 2009. Fall 2009 Board of Regents action on proposed Standards and Performance Indicators. 12
