 One of the most crucial aspects to effective classroom management, is to state the rules and expectations of the class on the very first day of school. This will help set the tone for the entire year.

 Make sure that you’re students are clear on the rules of your class, as well as the consequences that will occur if he or she decides to break these rules. Always be sure to be consistent with both punishments and rewards.

 Examples of positive language over negative language: - “Please use your walking feet” instead of “don’t run”. - “Listen while Ms. Kara is talking” instead of “don’t talk in class”. - “Make good choices” instead of “don’t misbehave.”

 Always be sure to give constant feedback and praise towards good behavior, don’t just focus on commenting on the bad behavior.

 Each individual child will learn at his or her own pace. It is important to provide extra help to those students who are struggling, while keeping the advanced students occupied and challenged.

 When dealing with misbehavior from a particular student, make sure to pull the student aside to discuss the problem.  Confronting the student in front of the rest of the class will cause embarrassment and shame.

 Set up frequent parent/teacher conferences.  Send home weekly notes on child’s school performance.  Encourage communication with parents.

 Show students how to do something the first time you do it, in a detailed manner.  Go slow at first, to ensure that the student’s can perform correctly and efficiently.  Don’t move on to the next activity until ALL students are caught up.

 Tips for getting your class’s attention: › Take charge of the class by engaging in conversation with the students › Enforce a seating charge › Focus on the disruptive students

 Organization is vital to successful classroom management.  Be organized throughout the year with your lesson plans, schedules, activities, etc.  Organization Tools: › File cabinet › Folders for each subject › Document each child’s progress/class work › Keep room neat and label centers/areas.
