2 ABRAHAM LINCOLN 16 TH PRESIDENT OF THE U.S. UNTIL HIS ASSASSINATION IN 1865 AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF THE CIVIL WAR

3 EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."

4 13 TH AMENDMENT(FREEDOM) THIS AMENDMENT FREED ALL SLAVES WITHIN THE UNITED STATES.

5 14 TH AMENDMENT (CITIZENSHIP) ALL PEOPLE BORN OR NATURALIZED IN THE UNITED STATES WERE NOW CITIZENS. THIS GAVE SLAVES THE FULL RIGHTS AND PRIVLEDGES OF CITIZENSHIP.

6 15 TH AMENDMENT (MALE VOTE) THIS AMENDMENT GAVE ONLY AFRICAN- AMERICAN MALES THE RIGHT TO VOTE.

7 UNION FOUGHT TO REUNITE THE REPUBLIC DURING THE CIVIL WAR AGAINST THE CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS OF THE SOUTH. ( SHOW STUDENTS CIVIL WAR UNIFORMS)

8 CONFEDERACY STATES THAT SECEDED (formally withdrew) FROM THE UNION DUE TO ISSUES OVER STATES RIGHTS AND SLAVERY.

9 GETTYSBURG ADDRESS SPEECH DELIVERED BY PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN AFTER THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG DURING THE CIVIL WAR. STATED THAT EQUALITY WAS NEEDED TO PRESERVE THE UNION.

10 LINCOLN-DOUGLAS DEBATES DEBATE BETWEEN ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND STEPHEN DOUGLAS. DOUGLAS WANTED STATES TO DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT THEY SHOULD HAVE SLAVERY. LINCOLNSLAVERY LINCOLN SAID SLAVERY WENT AGAINST THE IDEALS OF AMERICA.

11 SECESSION THE ACT OF WITHDRAWING FROM AN ORGANIZATION, UNION, OR A POLITICAL ENTITY.

12 RECONSTRUCTION TIME PERIOD IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE CIVIL WAR. LASTED FROM 1865-1877 PLAN TO REBUILD THE SOUTH AND CHANGE UNEQUAL LAWS AND PRACTICES.

13 CONSCRIPTION FORCED ENLISTMENT OF SERVICE TO A COUNTRY; USUALLY FORCED ENTRY INTO THE ARMED FORCES.

14 FREEDMEN’S BUREAU The Freedmen's Bureau Bill, which created the Freedmen's Bureau, was initiated by President Abraham Lincoln and was intended to last for one year after the end of the Civil War. 15 KU KLUX KLAN CREATED BY CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS AFTER THE CIVIL WAR. THE PURPOSE OF THE KKK WAS TO INSTILL FEAR INTO AFRICAN- AMERICANS, AND FIGHT EQUALITY IN THE SOUTH.

16 JEFFERSON DAVIS SERVED AS PRESIDENT OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA DURING THE CIVIL WAR.

17 KANSAS-NEBRASKA ACT ACT DRAFTED BY SENATOR STEPHEN DOUGLAS FOR THE KANSAS-NEBRASKA TERRITORIES. DOUGLAS SAID THAT BY THE PRINCIPAL OF POPULAR SOVEREIGNTY, THAT STATES SHOULD DECIDE IF THEY SHOULD HAVE SLAVERY

18 3/5 TH COMPROMISE SLAVE STATES WERE ABLE TO COUNT 3/5THS OF THEIR SLAVES AS THEIR POPULATION. THIS ALLOWED SLAVE STATES TO GET MORE REPRESENTATION IN CONGRESS.

19 BLEEDING KANSAS Bleeding Kansas, Bloody Kansas or the Border War Series of violent political confrontations involving anti-slavery and pro-slavery settlers. Took place in the Kansas Territory and the neighboring towns of Missouri between 1854 and 1861.Kansas TerritoryMissouri

21 Harriet Beecher “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” Novel that informed America about the treatment of slaves. This novel was significant as it would inspire many to insist upon the abolition of slavery and lead to the “Civil War”.

22 DRED SCOTT DECISION SLAVE THAT SUED HIS MASTER FOR FREEDOM. SCOTT AND HIS FAMILY LIVED WITH HIS MASTER IN FREE STATES SCOTT STATED THAT HE SHOULD BE GIVEN HIS FREEDOM. THE SUPREME COURT DENIED HIS FREEDOM; BLACKS NOT CITIZENS

24 Robert E. Lee Military Commander of the Confederate troops. Confederate soldiers were more loyal to Lee that the President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis.

25 Ulysses S. Grant The last of many Union Generals that led the North to its victory against the Confederates. Often called the butcher because of thousands of Union deaths

26 John Wilkes Booth Noted Shakespearean Actor Sided with the Confederates Plotted with other conspirators to kill the President and his cabinet Assassinated President Abraham Lincoln at Ford’s Theater in Washington,D.C.

29 Missouri Compromise Slavery not allowed north of the parallel of 36°30′ north ; slavery allowed within Missouri. 36°30′ north

30 Compromise of 1850 Compromise between the North and the South where: A) California admitted into the US as a free state B) Slave trade abolished in Washington D.C. C) Harsher fugitive slave act D) Texas gave up New Mexico and given money to pay off debts.

32 Wilmot Proviso If this had been accepted by Congress, the law would have made all lands won from Mexico in the Mexican-American War free from slavery.

33 Black Codes Began after the Civil War with the purpose of restricting the rights of African-Americans.

34 Jim Crow State and local laws that were passed towards the end of the Reconstruction era in 1876 and lasted until 1965 BEGAN AFTER BLACK CODES!!!
