Warm Up Alice uses a pedometer to see how far she walks. On Monday she walked 4.2 miles. On the other days of the week she walked 5.55, 6.3, 4.7, 4.25, 11.5, and 9.2 miles. Estimate the total distance Alice walked that week by rounding each distance to the nearest whole number.
Use Number Lines to Round Decimals Alignment Lesson Day 26
How can you use a number line to round 14.235 to the nearest tenth? Think about what the possible answer will be since we need to round to the nearest tenth. – Which two tenths would 14.235 fall between on a number line? – The answer will be either 14.2 or 14.3. Create a number line like the one below. 14.2 14.3
Determine where 14.235 will fall on the number line. The spaces on the number line each represent one hundredth. 0.035 is between 0.03(0) and 0.04(0) so I place the halfway between the line for 0.03(0) and 0.04(0). Look at the number line and where you’ve placed the number to determine which number it is closer to. 14.235 is closer to 14.2 so when rounded to the nearest tenth it is 14.2. 14.214.3 14.21 14.22 14.23 14.24 14.25 14.26 14.27 14.28 14.29

How to Play I will call the numbers and the rounding place. Once the card has been read, you should draw a number line and show where the number would be placed to determine the rounded answer. We will stop to discuss & prove the rounded answer using your number lines and you can cover the number if they included it on their Bingo Card.
