Abstract ID 1196 CT volumetry of adrenal glands in normal subjects

Introduction Wide varieties of the adrenal diseases that lead to morphologic changes in adrenal glands. Adrenal gland is variable in shape and size Adrenal thickness- Considered as a useful parameter Measuring volume will be more appropriate than the size of the gland With multidetector spiral computed tomography, the determination of adrenal volume has become possible in recent years.

To date, only limited studies available. – Based on western and chinese population However no studies are available for CT volumetry of adrenal gland volume in indian populations.

Aim and objective To calculate volumetry of adrenal glands in patients reported for CT abdomen without any clinical evidence of diseases related to adrenals

Materials and method PROTOCOL : Non contrast CT KUB or Abdomen, helical, 2mm slice thickness in 16 slice multidetector CT. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Patients of both sexes and different age groups(20-40 yrs) reporting for CT KUB or Abdomen EXCLUSION CRITERIA: Patients with clinical /biochemical suspicion of adrenal disease. Patients having diseases in which adrenal involvement suspected. Patients with known malignancy.

Study Design Study population :(100) (50males and 50 female ) Clinical data collected and pt underwent NCCT Volume calculated in axial section by summing areas of all relavant sections X 2

Discussion No significant difference in the mean right and total adrenal gland volumes between males and females (p values 0.76 and 0.137 respectively for right and total gland volumes). However there is a statistically significant difference in the volumes of left adrenal glands (p value= 0.026), being larger in females. The results are comparable with studies done in the western population(Mean volume 3.62cc for Right and 3.73cc for Left)(4,5). However as compared with chinese studies, Significantly smaller volumes of indian population could be representative of our genetic make up.(Mean volume 4.23 and 4.26)(6).
