Bible Baptisms

Introduction  Baptism became a new word in the English Language in 1611 at the translation of the King James Version.  The Church of England, Anglican, (Episcopalian in the U. S.), practiced sprinkling and pouring.

 Thus, when they came to the Greek word, baptizo –bapti/zw, they could not use the accurate definition.  Definition: immerse, dip, plunge.  So, a transliteration was made: an English pronunciation of a Greek word.

 Baptist scholars put out a version, the American Bible Union of 1864, that translated baptizo correctly as “immerse.”  However, they soon called in all copies for they had lost their own name!

 John was no longer the Baptist.  He was John the Immerser!  So that translation, accurate though it may be, has disappeared.

Baptism into Moses  For I would not, brethren, have you ignorant, that our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; (1 Corinthians 10:1-2)

 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and Jehovah caused the sea to go (back) by a strong east wind all the night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. (Exodus 14:21)

 And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left. (Exodus 14:22)

 This baptism was:  Separation from Egypt, freedom  Uniting with Moses  Burial, resurrection (cloud, sea)  New life  Salvation

Baptism of the Holy Spirit  I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and (in) fire: (Matthew 3:11)

 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize in water, he said unto me, Upon whomsoever thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and abiding upon him, the same is he that baptizeth in the Holy Spirit. (John 1:33)

 But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.  (Acts 1:8)

 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:4)

Baptism of Fire  I indeed baptize you in water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and (in) fire: (Matthew 3:11)

 whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing- floor; and he will gather his wheat into the garner, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.  (Matthew 3:12)

 And if thy hand cause thee to stumble, cut it off: it is good for thee to enter into life maimed, rather than having thy two hands to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire.

 (where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.) And if thy foot cause thee to stumble, cut it off: it is good for thee to enter into life halt, rather than having thy two feet to be cast into hell.

 (where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.)  And if thine eye cause thee to stumble, cast it out: it is good for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell;

 where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.  For every one shall be salted with fire.  (Mark 9:43-49)

Baptism of Suffering  And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?  And they said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and one on (thy) left hand, in thy glory.

 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink the cup that I drink? or to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

 And they said unto him, We are able. And Jesus said unto them, The cup that I drink ye shall drink; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized:

 but to sit on my right hand or on (my) left hand is not mine to give; but (it is for them) for whom it hath been prepared. (Mark 10:36-40)

John’s Baptism  Then went out unto him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about the Jordan; and they were baptized of him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.  (Matthew 3:5-6)

 and they spake, saying unto him, Tell us: By what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?

 And he answered and said unto them, I also will ask you a question; and tell me:  The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men?  (Luke 20:2-4)

 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper country came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples: and he said unto them, Did ye receive the Holy Spirit when ye believed? And they (said) unto him, Nay, we did not so much as hear whether the Holy Spirit was (given).

 And he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into John's baptism. And Paul said, John baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him that should come after him, that is, on Jesus.

 And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.  (Acts 19:1-5)

 Looked forward to coming of Jesus.  Not in the name of the Trinity.  Not by authority of Jesus.  Only to lost sheep of Israel.  Used only prior to Pentecost.

 John’s baptism was for the remission of sins (Mark 1:4)  John came, who baptized in the wilderness and preached the baptism of repentance unto remission of sins.  This is the same phrase as:

 And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  (Acts 2:38)

Baptism of Jesus  And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  (Acts 2:38)

 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.  (Acts 8:38)

 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on his name.  (Acts 22:16)

 Or are ye ignorant that all we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him through baptism unto death:

 that like as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.  (Romans 6:3-4)

 For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all made to drink of one Spirit.  (1 Corinthians 12:13)

 For ye are all sons of God, through faith (the faith, RHL), in Christ Jesus.  For as many of you as were baptized into Christ did put on Christ.  (Galatians 3:26-27)

 that aforetime were disobedient, when the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water:

 which also after a true likeness doth now save you, (even) baptism, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the interrogation of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ;  (1 Peter 3:20-21)

Baptism for the Dead  Else what shall they do that are baptized for the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why then are they baptized for them?  (1 Corinthians 15:29)  Context is the resurrection.

 Paul is not saying it is correct to baptize persons for other dead persons.  Baptism is valid only to those who hear, believe, repent, and confess their faith in Jesus as the Son of God.

 It is possible that Paul refers to this only to emphasize that persons will be raised from the dead.  It is possible this was practiced by heathen religions.  It is possible that misinformed Christians were practicing this.

Conclusion  Baptisms:  MosesJohn  Holy SpiritJesus  FireDead  Suffering

 Only one baptism is valid today.  And Jesus came to them and spake unto them, saying, All authority hath been given unto me in heaven and on earth. Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: (Matthew 28:18-19)

 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that disbelieveth shall be condemned  (Mark 16:15-16)

 (There is) one body, and one Spirit, even as also ye were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who is over all, and through all, and in all.  (Ephesians 4:4-6)
