Learning Outcome: Discover a relationship among the side lengths of a right triangle.

Recall: A right triangle is a triangle that has one angle equal to 90˚ (right angle). The two sides of the triangle that meet at the 90˚ are called the legs. The longest side, across from the right angle is called the hypotenuse.

There are two types of right triangles:

Using the chart below in your notes, complete the Investigate Activity on page 31 in your textbook.

Here is a right triangle, with a square drawn on each side:

Notice that: 25 = 9 + 16. A similar relationship is true for all right triangles. In a right triangle the area of the hypotenuse equals the area sum of both legs. This relationship is called the Pythagorean Theorem. We can use this relationship to find any missing side length for any right triangle.

Find the missing side length:

Follow through the examples for more instruction on using the Pythagorean Theorem to identify right triangles. Once you feel you understand the concepts in the lesson move on to the Practice Assignment

Assignment: Lesson 1.5 page 31-36 #1-3, 5-9, 12-15 You should have completed lessons 1.1 to 1.4 by now. Make sure you are completing your quizzes for each lesson to provide yourself with feedback on how well you are learning the material.
