2 Industrial Revolution  Major turning point in American History  Changed almost every aspect of life  1750-1850  Steam power was introduced during this period of time

3 Industrial Revolution(cont.)  Agriculture, manufacturing, mining, transportation and technology were the main industries  Samuel Slater is considered the father of the American Industrial Revolution

4 Cotton Gin  Was developed by Eli Whitney  Turning Point in the economic history of the U.S  Used by cotton farmers in the south  Was considered the future of the Southern farmers at the time  Cotton was the major product in the south so this was one of the revolutionary inventions of the South

5 Expansion of Agriculture- West  Fertile land and soil  Was for some people a new start in life  People farmed cattle and cows  Some people were prospectors in search of gold

6 Expansion of Agriculture- South  Made cotton and tobacco  Used slaves  Civil war made profit on crops drop dramatically

7 Advances in Transportation  In 1811 the first road was built. Now that road is called Route 40  Karl Benz invented the first automobile in 1886  Steamboats were a huge revolution in the way that American’s traded goods and received goods  The first steamboat in was successfully built by John Fitch in 1787

8 Canals and Railroads  Canals were designed for the use of steamboats  They were used for travel and transportation of goods  Railroads revolutionized travel at the time  It was used to transport goods  Many slaves and workers died laying railroad tracks

9 Telegraph  The telegraph at the time was the major revolution of communication  It was used with code through telegraph wires throughout the U.S  Samuel Morse, the inventor of Morse code invented the telegraph language, Morse code  These would be instrumental in the Civil War

10 Immigration  During the Industrial Revolution many immigrants wanted to live the “American Dream” and come to America  There were so many immigrants coming from major port cities such as New York and San Francisco  The main races were Chinese, Irish and other Europeans

11 Famine in Ireland  In the 1800’s there was a great famine called the “Potato Famine”  This forced many Irish people to move to the east coast of the U.S  Duffy’s Cut is a famous historical site where many Irish immigrants were killed laying railroad tracks

12 Political Unrest in Germany  In the middle half of the nineteenth century almost half of Ireland and Germany immigrated to the U.S  There was severe unemployment, much unrest in the Government and inconceivable hardships at home

13 Recruiting the Chinese  During the Industrial Revolution many Chinese immigrants came to America for the California Gold Rush  They were enlisted into laying railroad tracks  Although there was a large scale immigration the population decreased over time

14 Reaction of Nativists  Some people to the were happy about the Mass Migration to the U.S while some were not  Most people were unhappy about the Chinese immigration  There was now competition for their work but they were doing the hard labor work for minimum wage and maximum hours
