2. Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte Was a Chilean army general and dictator. He was the Commander in Chief of the Chilean army between 1973 and 1998. He was also the President of the Government Junta of Chile from 1973 to 1974 and He was the President of Chile from 1974 until 1990. He has been remembered for violating human rights, he is also responsible for the death of thousands, my mothers family were victims of his crime and dictatorship. He repressed, as well as reshaped Chile for many years. He lead a corrupt country. He was also involved in Operation Condor, a co-operative effort on the part of several South American governments to do away with leftist opposition leaders, often by means of murder.

3. Continued. he was charged with several war crimes relating to his time as President, however he died in 2006 before he could be convicted of anything. In 1948, Pinochet and Salvador Allende met, Salvador was a young Chilean senator. A socialist. Allende had come to visit the concentration camp run by Pinochet where many Chilean communists were being held. In 1970, Allende was elected president of Chile. He promoted Pinochet to commander of the Santiago garrison for the next three years. Allende promoted Pinochet to commander-in-chief of all Chilean armed forces on August 23, 1973. Trusting Pinochet was one of Allende’s biggest mistakes.

4. Allende was the first ever democratically elected socialist president in the world. Allende was killed in la Moneda- the presidential house on the 11th of September 1973(the aftermath was the bloodiest in the history of 20th century Latin America). The American hunter jets came in with the help of the Chilean army – their hostility took over. Allende had nationalized everything in Chile, which gave owner ship to the people. The Americans and Pinochet’s army were against Allende’s nationalization of Chile, they revolted in order to over throw his government. Pinochet seized power in a Nixon administration supported bloody coup against the Popular Unity -People's Front government (of Salvador Allende.)

5. The fascist police state that Pinochet lead and created for 17 years has not only been minimized by the US but it has been ignored. My grandmother was tried for treason which was false- she had her photo taken with socialist leaders, when propaganda books were published. My grandmother was in charge of a political publishing company- Quimantu. Once she was tried, one of the judges recognized her because my mothers godfather had been in the army- and the judge had recognized her name. He then freed my family and gave them 24 hours to leave the country, they flew out that day with the united nations.

6. Marc Cooper’s Journey with Allende Marc cooper is an award winning journalist. He was Allende’s translator until 1973. This book discusses his journey in the final days of Allende’s presidency as well as his encounters with Pinochet. He write about the raw atmosphere as well as the evacuation and hiding that occurred under the protection of the UN. This book is also about his journey to Chile 25 years later, and the country which was unrecognizable to him. This book is a commemoration of the tragedies that never had a chance to be forgotten mainly because it was never acknowledged by those who suffered it. His compelling journalism is able to capture both political facts, but more importantly it describes firsthand experiences in Chile which have no been reported. He was able to document his suppressed horror in a way in which makes the reader feel the agony of those in Chile during this time.
