5 A bit about NES…. NES is a Special Health Board responsible for supporting NHS services in Scotland by developing and delivering education and training for those who work in NHSScotland (NES fast facts)

6 Aim for Nursing and Midwifery is to contribute to the delivery of safe, effective and person centred care by: facilitating and supporting education for nurses and midwives and health care support workers across the NHS Career Framework for Health promoting excellence in the pre- registration preparation of nurses and midwives leading on educational development for clinical priorities which require a significant nursing and midwifery contribution.

7 Early Clinical Career Fellowships Healthcare needs of the population are constantly changing and NHS Scotland needs a responsive workforce which is fit for the future. The work programme to Modernise Nursing Careers commenced in 2006. NHS Scotland piloted ECCF on behalf of the 4 UK countries. Evaluation findings then informed the revised model for ECCF 2011 and ECCF 2012 This is an investment in talented and motivated nurses and midwives to develop the Clinical Leaders of the Future 2007-2010/1 Cohort 1 Pilot n=49 2008-2011/2 Cohort 2 Pilot n= 50 2011-2014 ECCF 2011 n= 20 2012-2015ECCF 2012 n=18

8 Early Clinical Career Fellowships Funded by the Scottish Government – Led by NHS Education for Scotland in collaboration with NHS Boards, Universities and Professional Organisations National Steering Group SGHD, NES, Academic Heads, Leadership unit, NHS Board lead, RCN/RCM, ALS Facilitator Forum, ECCF Fellows NES Project Team Accountable Officer - Liz Jamieson - Programme Director Operational Lead - Ann Rae - Educational Projects Manager Project Co-ordinator- Dawn Bartwicki NHS Board leads for ECCF Details on ECCF webpages of NES website

9 How it works.... NHS Board Service Level Agreement between NES and each NHS Board Funding is provided to the NHS Boards to backfill study leave to release fellows Board Leads for ECCF submit Biannual reports to NES Universities NES provide fellows with a sponsor letter for Universities Universities invoice NES for masters programmes. Masterclasses and ALS NES organises masterclasses ALS facilitators organise Sets and report attendance to NES

10 ECCF 2012 Elements 3 year fixed term fellowship –September 2012- end August 2015 Study leave –300hrs per year equivalent to 7.5hrs for 40 weeks –Negotiation with Line Manager to ensure patient care is not affected –Each Financial year 1 st April – 31 st March –2012-2013 Sept – March = 7months – 175 hours –Suggest keeping records – form provided –Study leave is for ALL elements of the fellowship –Own time required too

11 ECCF 2012 Elements continued … Funded Part time Masters taking 2-3 years –Course selection –Planning - consider availability of modules –Dissertations linked to practice –Support from your Academic Supervisor Action Learning –Action Learning Set Facilitators –Jackie Chaplin (E), Joyce Jeffray (SW), Ian Duncan (N) –3 groups organised by employing Health Board region –Start today 4-7 fellows in each group – change groups? –4 sets per year – attendance essential for all sets

12 ECCF 2012 Elements continued … Masterclasses 2 masterclasses per year Joint ECCF 2011/ECCF2012 10am – 4pm in central belt What would you like included? e.g Person Centredness, Patient Safety, Clinical Effectiveness, Careers, Leadership, Managing Conflict

13 Who is there to support you ? ECCF project team in NHS Education for Scotland Your Peers Action Learning Set Facilitator Line Manager Academic Supervisor Mentor (Clinical Coach) Board lead for ECCF

14 Expectations of fellows Attend all aspects of the fellowship, some of which will be in own time Some financial commitment e.g. resources for studying, travel and subsistence, (module resit/graduation costs). Maintain regular contact with Mentor for ECCF, NHS Board lead for ECCF and NHS Education for Scotland ECCF project team. Participate in national evaluations of the fellowship Provide a report to NES and the NHS Board on completion of the fellowship. Disseminate findings from dissertation. Commit to contributing to the delivery of quality patient care in NHS Scotland both throughout the fellowship and for a period of 2 years beyond.

15 Examples of contributing to delivery of quality patient care Contributing to local practice development Demonstrating leadership behaviours Impact of Dissertation findings – e.g. Support for families of children with complex needs Papers and publications Being an ambassador for the nursing and midwifery profession

16 Successful completion of the fellowship? End August 2015 Completion of a part time Masters programme of study. Access to a mentor for ECCF. Attendance and participation in Action Learning. Attendance at masterclasses.
