The Important Stuff… Beginnings A good one should catch a reader’s attention, and hold it. Keep their attention (make ‘em want to read!) Go back to your intro after you’ve written a little Anecdote – The other books you’ve read and either loved or hated and why Fences is better. – Don’t like reading, but enjoyed reading fences Dialogue – Quote from the book – Dialogue from class Facts & Statistics – Drop out rate in WCPS – Percentage of male students – Race in WCPS Structure Intro: **Use one of the strategies here **background about Fences the book & a plot summary **thesis statement

A Model Body Paragraph In WCPS there are 22,495 students. Of these students, 51% (11,504) of them are male. Just like WCPS, many of the characters in Fences are also male. Within the play, the male characters struggle with achieving their dreams and finding happiness in life. By reading Fences, many 11 th grade male students could learn a lot about life and not have to endure the same struggles that Troy, Cory, and Lyons experience. Also, of the 22,495 students that attend WCPS, 28% of them come from a diverse, non-white background. Even though all the characters in Fences are African Americans, most students will be able to relate to the issues that the Maxon family experiences throughout the play.

Books we read in high school… To Kill a Mockingbird Romeo & Juliet Of Mice and Men Animal Farm Into the Wild A Raisin in the Sun Fences Macbeth A Midsummer’s Night Dream Lord of the Flies The Hunger Games The Book Thief The Chocolate War The Things They Carried A Long Way Gone The Outsiders The Secret Life of Bees

Good, Bad, Ugly? Everyone should read Fences. You should read this book; I really liked it. Fences is about a family in the 1950s. Fences should be read by all 11 th grade students in Washington County Public Schools because students can relate to it.

Thesis Statements Includes topic & claim & why: – Fences should/should not be read by every 11 th grader in Washington County Public Schools because of it’s relatable characters. – Topics should be in order as they will be in the essay! Does NOT include phrases like: – I think – You should – (anything with personal pronouns)

Reflection: Concerning your essay: -What are you most nervous about? -What are you most excited about?

Journal Explodes REQUIREMENTS 5 paragraphs – Introduction – Conclusion 3 middle supporting paragraphs – Evidence – Examples – Personal stories/anecdotes Thesis statement RUBRIC Each paragraph = 5 points Thesis statement = 5 points Details/evidence to support/explain thesis statements = 5 points GREAT vocab = 5 bonus points 40 points total

How can self-imposed barriers prevent people from growing and experiencing their dreams?

Fences Fences are good because…Fences are bad because… Divide you from neighbor problems Provide privacy Create boundaries Protection Keep pets contained A sense of style (decorate them) Create boundaries Restricts exploration A symbol of disagreement Creates a limited space Doesn’t allow anything new
