2 United States is a Young Nation
The US Government has the job of: Building a government Making Peace with the Native Americans Marinating control over expanding lands Establishing itself in the international community

3 Conflict in Ohio River Valley
Treaty of Paris gave US land west of Appalachian MNTS British still occupy forts in Great Lakes Region and provide guns and ammo to Indians to fight US expansion 1790-Indian Forces are attacking settlers; Troops sent and are defeated Indians led by Chief Little Turtle 1791-more troops sent and are Defeated By Little Turtle Battle of Fallen Timbers- August Federal Troops led by General Anthony Wayne defeat the Indians Treaty of Greenville- Indians accept peace. Give up lands in OHIO

4 American Relations with Europe
Relations with France 1789-French Revolution is Happening American saw French as fellow Republicans until revolution leaders start executing opponents Americans divided on its stance with France Democratic Republicans-support France Federalists-thought they were anarchists

5 Proclaiming Neutrality
1793- France and Britain at War Both Political Parties are that the US is: 1.) too weak to go to war 2.) too dependent on British trade America issues proclamation of Neutrality. This stance would last until 12th century Jay Treaty of John Jay sent to London Britain Gives up forts in America and gets to keep American ships that they have seized Pinckney's Treaty of guaranteed US access to Mississippi river and trade access with New Orleans

6 Washington’s Farewell
1796-Washington decides to no longer be President and sets a precedent of voluntary retirement after 2 Terms This precedent would be honored until the 1940’s John Adams defeats Thomas Jefferson in the 1796 Presidential Election

7 XYZ Affair French saw Jay Treaty of 1794 as a betrayal of a 1778 treaty. They start seizing American merchant ships to show they were mad Adams sends people to negotiate peace. 3 French officials known as X,Y, & Z demand humiliating terms and 250,000 in bride money This insult roused public sentiment in France and is known as the XYZ Affair 1798 Congress votes to expand Army and create a small Navy, which wins some surprising victories over French Warships

8 Alien and Sedition Acts
1798 Federalists exploit war fever by passing these acts Alien Act-allowed President to arrest and deport immigrants who criticize the government Sedition Act-crime for citizens to publicly discredit the government

9 Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions
These 2 state legislatures pass resolutions to the controversial acts Declares them unconstitutional Sets up the Presidential election of 1800 to decide the balance of power and states rights

10 Election of 1800 Jefferson and his running mate tie.
Voters meant for Jefferson to become President Ballots not set up correctly and voting procedure flawed House of Reps decide Jefferson is President To avoid this disaster again, constitution is amended Separate Voting for President and Vice President created
