Examining the “historical” portion of this “historical fiction” novel

You are going to spend the hour looking through photos, coverage and various media that deal with actual life, death and murder trial for Emmett Till. As we talked about yesterday, this day requires a great deal of maturity and respect on your part. Emmett Till was a real person who endured a horrific tragedy. As a way to show our respect today, it is requested that you spend this day in silence as you work. Treat this almost as if you were attending a funeral. This will also help you take in the content more individually and seriously. You will have an opportunity for further self-reflection and group discussion next week.

You are not going to be given heavily guided directions for today. This is your chance to make meaningful connections with the content. However, when prompted, please add notes/thoughts/questions/etc. so that you will be able to speak and reflect about what saw on Friday. Please add an entry to your “Discussion Prep” Google Doc with today’s date, Wednesday, 2/27.

Access the link below to view a variety of pictures. Take your time to look at them to “see beyond” the image the the photographer captured. Jot a few notes about your thoughts as you look/after you look at this pictures. Think: What questions do these pictures raise for you? http://www.loc.gov/pictures/search/?q=emmett%20til l http://www.loc.gov/pictures/search/?q=emmett%20til l

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/31/magazine/31TIL L.html?pagewanted=all&_r=1& (lengthy, but includes interview with jurors and lawyers from the trial!) http://www.nytimes.com/2005/07/31/magazine/31TIL L.html?pagewanted=all&_r=1& 1. When you click on the link above, skim portions of the article. Write down two things that surprised you when you read this. 2. Use the same link from above and if you SCROLL TO THE BOTTOM, there are some pretty current PDF articles attached. Read at least two of them as they are short. What questions do these articles raise for you?

This link will actually bring you to the very detailed confession of Emmett Till’s killers. 1. As you are reading, stop and reflect WHY I would share this with you. Think back to when we talked about sensationalism and why this does not qualify. 2. How does reading this shape/affect your deeper understanding of this novel? http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/till/sfeature/sf_look_co nfession.html
