1 Psychology 2010 Lab Lab overview Links to assignments, resources 30% of final course grade 4 assignments (PsycInfo, www, variables, SPSS) 2 labs (observation, correlation) research proposal (term project)

2  Must complete ALL assignments, labs and the research proposal to receive a lab mark in the course Assignments assignments completed individually assignments worth 40% of lab mark (12/30) tentative weighting: PsycInfo (5), www(2), variables(2) SPSS (3) Labs and Proposal labs and proposal completed in partners labs and proposal worth 60% (18/30) (6pts each)  Note: late assignments, labs, etc. lose 5% per day

3 PsycInfo is the primary database used to search for psychology journal articles and books to get there: (i) Acadia web page and select library (ii) select Article Indexes OR, skip steps i and ii by typing in http://www.acadiau.ca/vaughan/indexes then from the alphabet list select P, scroll down to PsycInfo and click PsycInfo

4 keyword search - use one or two words related to the topic natural language search - use a phrase author search - use an author’s name subject search - gives a listing a topics to choose from you may be forced to narrow your search if you have way too much information to choose from way to look at the abstract under the Options key - this may also help you narrow it down Types of Searches

5 APA Format see text pp. 400-435 (pp. 384-419 in 4th Ed.) How to present citations in text (p.426; p.410 in 4th) According to Smith and Walker (1996) the APA publication guide should be used as a reference book as opposed to a “how to” book. The APA publication manual should be utilized as a reference book as opposed to a step by step guide (Smith & Walker, 1996).

6 APA Format - citations in text cont’d If there are 2 authors, cite surnames of both authors every time If 3-5 authors, cite all surnames the first time then the surname of first author and et al. for all subsequent citations –e.g., 1st citation: Milliken, Joordens, Merikle & Seiffert (1998) 2nd citation: Milliken et al. (1998) If there are 6 or more authors, use surname of first author and et al. for every citation

7 Sample introduction p. 409 (p.394 in 4th) reference page: p. 419 (p.403 in 4th) reference entry formats p.420-421 (p.404-405 in 4th) based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (4th Ed.) so you can use it also if you can find a copy.

13 PsycInfo Assignment Due: In two weeks in lab Come up with 5 research questions and choose one to research using PsycInfo Find at least 3 of the references in the library, at least 2 must be research (empirical) journal articles. Record ref. Info (title, authors, journal, vol, page#) Read them, noting pertinent info such as : What topic did the authors investigate? What were their hypotheses? What variables were under study? What were the main findings?

14 PsycInfo Assignment - cont’d Write a summary of the research you have found. –It should read like an introduction to a journal article. –Start with research question, logical progression, broad to narrow reviewing literature, using the minimum 3 sources, end with hypothesis put all references in an APA style reference page Print out a reference that you were unable to find in the library and complete an interlibrary loan form (attach printout). Do not submit it to library

15 PsycInfo Assignment Writing an Introduction APA style Begin with your research question Not simply a summary – should compare and contrast What material should an introduction contain? topic the authors investigated their hypotheses,variables, main findings End with your hypotheses

16 PsycInfo Assignment To Summarize: 1) a list of 5 research questions, identify the one you used for the rest of the assignment 2) an introduction using at least 3 of the articles relevant to the research question, ending with your research (experimental) and null hypotheses 3) a printout of the 5 references you found using PsycInfo 4) a properly-formatted APA-style reference section for at least 5 references relevant to your research topic 5) a completed interlibrary loan form for a reference not available in the Acadia library (highlight this reference on the PsycInfo printout).
