Internship scheme in a nutshell Gain experience of UK public policy Internships with MPs, think tanks, public affairs organisations and NGOs Excellent preparation for a career in public policy Good way to make contacts
Principles of a good CV… Emphasise what the reader will be interested in Use positive language Simple, clean design
Emphasise things they will be interested in… Hard skills –Previous work in another legislature –Useful business experience –Any work with political parties –Research experience –Particular academic subjects Soft skills –Written and oral communication skills –Ability to work on your own –Attention to detail
Your CV… Keep it to one page Include following sections –Personal details –Education –Relevant experience –Skills –Anything else you have space for!
What to include in each section… Personal details –LSE address & nationality (EU or outside EU) –Usual contact details – London address + phone number Education –Emphasise masters –Relevant modules
What to include in each section… Relevant experience –Previous work in another legislature –Useful business experience –Any work with political parties –Research experience Skills –IT, language skills Anything else?
Your cover letter… State very clearly ideal work area Highlight research interests and relevant experience For MPs – political affiliations Show your motivation. Why do you want to intern in a particular area?
